Johnny Polygon - I Been Runnin'
Artist: Johnny Polygon
Producer: DJ Green Lantern
Album: Back 2 The Basics 2 (The Resurrection)
Label: Unsigned
Should musicians feel obligated to act as good role models for the young and impressionable? It’s a question posed frequently (and often unfairly) in regard to hip-hop, and rap in particular. On I Been Runnin’, a new record off Legend, DJ Nice, and DJ Green Lantern‘s Back 2 The Basics 2 (The Resurrection) mixtape (available here), up-and-comer Johnny Polygon gives no doubt as to which side of the fence he’s on, as he gleefully sets a bad example for kids everywhere. After echoing the sentiments of an uncle who encouraged him to hit first in grade school fistfights, the emcee proceeds to play down the importance of both education and parental authority, spitting, “If you’re passin’ that’s cool/ If not, oh well/ If your parents got a problem, say ‘F*ck you, go to hell!’” Though we at DJBooth.net do not endorse this kind of behavior, Polygon’s rotten attitude, along with Green Lantern’s minimal beat and repeated vocal hook makes for a thoroughly entertaining listening experience. Hungry for more new material from this juvenile delinquent-turned-rapper? Check out his Wolf in Cheap Clothing mixtape, coming soon courtesy of Green Lantern’s Future Green imprint.

I second Richard's mention about not advocating what Johnny says in the song - but with that said... he is mad entertaining. I actually listened to this record four times in a row to get a good feel for his lyrics, flow and overall tone.
Green Lantern might have one in Mr. Polygon... |

The beat was weirdly awkward. I don't really like the hook and Johnny's flow doesn't move me. I agree WOW...let's smack him all at once.

This just doesn't come together for me. I've heard this guy on other tracks though, like he sings on Nas' "Black President" and I really liked his part on the mixtape's "Colourblind". Actually, hard to imagine that was this.
