John Public - Untitled Life
Artist: John Public
Producer: John Public
Album: Re-Gifted Thrift Shop Experience
Label: Unsigned
As the stage name suggests, Jersey native John Public is all about giving voice to the unsung (and un-rapped) masses. Fresh off speaking truth to power on a Veteran’s Day revamp of Freedom People, the freestyle series alum is back to wax populistic once again on his latest offering, Untitled Life (a Booth-exclusive world premiere!). Public himself handles both production and mic duties, but not without a little help from his (numerous) friends. Live band The Mercy Project, led by Jon Notar, serve up some organically funky grooves as the headliner delivers easily-relatable reflections on the struggle to make ends meet. Gritty and down-to-Earth as the emcee’s account of city life may be, the record’s overall effect is uplifting – of course, it’s hard not to sound uplifting when you’ve got an entire gospel choir (in this case, Jersey’s own Jubilation) backing you up. Those feeling this inspirationally dope joint can find plenty more will this came from on Public’s forthcoming, Booth-sponsored Re-Gifted: Thrift Shop Experience mixtape, set to hit our front page Dec. 13.

Artists like John Public remind me that there are real musicians out there - not just one trick rappers with a bankroll and a home studio. I love the incorporation of the choir and the live instrumentation. It has an impactful feel. Something you won't forget the second you listen to the next DJBooth.net feature on our homepage. Never before has a song with the word "Untitled" been more profound.

Well, i must say that this record has such a powerful presense. The chorus is so strong and soulful. Also, im really feeling John's verses in this. He shows true talent. He does it different than anyone and does it better that way. I cant help but love the production from himself in this. This is a nice solid track to his album. A banger for me.

I don't tend to give 5 stars but there is just something timeless about this track. Upbeat, epic, funky, oldschool, newschool. A hard one to pull off, but I believe it was done flawlessly.

Goddamn. I didn't realize until just now how much better everything is with a gospel choir behind it. To say I haven't heard anything like this in a minute would be an understatement - props to Public. I'm stoked to hear the whole project.

The fact John Public would go an a direction no would expect is not so out of the ordinary for him at all.
