John Legend
The Soundtrack for a Revolution

Black History Month is a time to reflect on the civil rights struggles of yesteryear, and, especially in socially and politically tumultuous times like these, to discuss about how their lessons can be applied to contemporary struggles. You could hardly ask for a better accompaniment to that conversation than The Soundtrack for a Revolution, a new compilation album which finds popular artists bringing the anthems of the Civil Rights era into the 2010s. Today, John Legend steps into the Booth with his reimagining of Woke Up This Morning, a slave spiritual which became a staple of the 1960s and ‘70s battles against racial injustice. The soul heavyweight produces and performs the standard on his lonesome, delivering its simple, memorable lyrics over his own stripped-down, bluesy piano accompaniment. Needless to say, Legend nails it, creating a rendition both timeless and timely. For more fresh, innovative takes on protest classics (including contributions from Wyclef Jean, The Roots, and many more), check out the aforementioned comp album, available in stores and online as of February 14.
