Showcasing an agile, brainy lyrical style over beats that sound like they hopped a time machine from the 1990s, Joey BadA$$ is unique among hip-hop’s current freshman class. That Unorthodox style, of course, is exactly why he’s one of the most buzzed-about artists in today’s game (and the Booth staff pick for Best New Indie Artist of 2012). On his first single via Mountain Dew’s Green Label Sound imprint, the Pro.Era standard-bearer continues to carve out his niche, delivering complex and self-confident verses over a piano-laced boom-bap groove by the one and only DJ Premier. This joint isn’t attached to any forthcoming project, but those digging it can check out the track’s official visuals at greenlabelsound.com.

This (former) kid just turned 18 years old today, and he's already working with Premier? Goddamn... Looking forward to hearing his upcoming material!

The first time I heard JayOhVee (Joey's Previous Name) I totally overlooked him. With a last name like bada$$, I didn't even give him a chance. I don't know what it was that drew me back to looking him up again and once I gave his 1999 mixtape a solid listen, I became a huge fan. It's hard to give respect to someone that is younger than you, but this kid has something special. I can't tell you enough how many times I've looped this kids cd in my car. He deserves mad respect because he's got something in him that really defines him as "real hip-hop." He's no soulja boy or 2 chainz, and yes I said it, Everything in between those two artists are complete garbage, Joey puts forth an effort that seems effortless and justifies what hip-hop is. I can't wait to hear Joey grow, all I know is that I back this cat 100%. He reps Brooklyn but has touched down here in SD for me. I just want to congrat him and other listeners that find the real in him. Keep it up Joey.

I love Primo, I like Joey Badass alright, I think he's hyped up a little too much - but this song is solid.

DJ Premier sets up Joey with a beat that is absolute fire. Joey Bada$$ knocks it out the park.
