Joell Ortiz - Battle Cry
Artist: Joell Ortiz
Producer: The Audible Doctor
Album: Farewell Summer LP
Label: Lush Life/eOne
I’ve been called crazy for making this claim before, most recently on Joell Ortiz’ previous feature ‘80s Baby, but for my money, the Brooklyn microphone destroyer is Slaughterhouse’s best emcee. Budden may be deeper, Crooked may be stronger and Royce may be crazier, but no one drops more consistently dope records than Joell. Go ahead, listen to this new leak Battle Cry and tell me I’m wrong. Fueled by a soul sampled beat underlaid by some dark underpinnings courtesy of The Audible Doctor, who clearly has the prescription for what ails hip-hop, Ortiz proceeds to go into his warrior mode and drop almost four straight minutes of artillery rap, flipping lines like “Guess what, that’s who I hang with / so when you speak industry I don’t speak the language / Play a beat and I’ll show you why I’m the head honcho / I’m getting away with murder like the white Bronco” with skill and power. Still don’t agree with me? Perhaps Joell’s upcoming Farewell Summer EP will convince you otherwise when it drops on September 10.

One of the best in the game today. Each record Joell releases makes you respect his skill and passion more and more. "Battle Cry" bleeds hip hop. Joell Ortiz is hip hop.

Joell went HARD! Pardon my ignorance, I've known he was a good rapper, but he was relentless with bars here.

right on on the slaughterhouse analysis Nathan. they each got their own unique style. but i think of all 4 emcee's as equals. this jam is definitely full of punchlines though. sick.

Sorry I'm not feeling it...it's not terrible but I don't think it's anywhere near the rating that people are giving it. The beat is nice and Joell does have good linesd but overall, it's 3.5 but rounding down to even out the rating

I'm sticking to my story - the scary things is, these aren't even his best bars. I can't think of another emcee who's so consistently dope - wack emcees better run when they hear Joell's Battle Cry.

Hear of slauterhouse, but never bumped them. This is why I joined the site, I wanted to know where real hip hop went. This guy is refreshing, I feel bad because there are people who are addicted to the radio rap and don't get to hear this. FIRE.

I always liked Joel the best in Slaughterhouse, this just proves he's the best in NYC right now. I feel bad for anyone who has beef with this guy

Consistency, as Nathan said, is definitely a trait that Joell Ortiz has embraced when it comes to music. Royce is my personal favorite of Slaughterhouse, but Joell is a close runner up.
Loved the rock inspired production going on in this one. Joell comes with some pretty sick punchlines sure to leave any die hard fan proud. Farewell Summer is gonna be nice. |

Wow if these are not his best bars I'm scared for the rest of hip hop right now lol. Seriously though lyrical hard hitting hip hop at it's finest.

I feel there isc a mismatch of energy here. Mellow production combined with Joel's intense lyrical rawness is not a good collabo. They should of given joel a stronger beat to rap to.
