Joe Budden - Sober Up
Artist: Joe Budden
Featuring: Crooked I
Producer: J. Cardim
Album: Mood Muzik 4
Label: eOne
When I was assigned to write about this record today it came with the warning, “I don’t mean to make your Monday more depressing, but….” I laughed, but it proved to be true. Even though Joe Budden is releasing some emotionally charged records for his Mood Musik Mondays series, the latest to drop, Sober Up, has hints of sunshine underneath the drug and alcohol, death and Machiavelli references; that sunshine could be a hellish fire though. Following up to last Monday’s release of Black Cloud, Budden keeps the mood consistently dark and miserable with a side of J. Cardim, whose production gives the beat some bass with a little bit of apocalyptic future. Crooked I, who headlined the DJ Booth showcase at A3C this past weekend, joins in on the funeral of feelings as the featured artist on the track. Honestly, I’m scared of what’s to come next Monday, and even more scared for Mood Muzik 4 to drop on October 26, coincidentally just before Halloween. Is there a Cymbalta-advocacy group that I can share this mixtape with? Crank this one while you’re wandering through that haunted house…that should brighten anyone’s day.

I know its all about the "mood," but Budden's last feature ("Black Cloud") was straight depressing. So much so that I had a real hard time enjoying his skill as an emcee. One listen and done.
"Sober Up," however, as our writer points out, has a hint of positivity behind it. I dig it. Plus, anytime you involve Crooked I and a producer who you clearly have chemistry with (J. Cardim), it spells success. |

The beat needs to be turned up & hit way harder. Besides that J.Cardim & Budden work well together. This is Mood Muzik to the fullest

I totally agree with Z that this one had at least a hint of sunshine unlike Black Cloud - although compared to anyone else this is still music to kill yourself to.
That's just Budden, love him or leave him, and I'm far to impressed with his talent and rhymes not to be impressed. However, it needs to be asked; Did Crooked best Joe on the mic? My vote's on yes. |

Damn. Call me crazy but I'm not usually drawn to Budden's tracks. This, however, is very well put together.

I thought Black Cloud was better than this!! Joe has the flow and voice to do dark songs better than any other mc i can think of!!
if you think thought Black Cloud was dark you should search for Joe's track by the name of "Three Sides To A Story"....now that song is dark!!!! |

The track was sick - no pun intended - but unfortunately kept on too long - Joe worked it and I felt his pain. Decent but not classic material.
