Jinx - F.I.L.A.

After reading the title of Massachusetts-bred Booth newcomer Jinx‘s new single, you might be expecting an ode to the popular sportswear company, or perhaps a track centered around a (probably F-bomb-containing) acronym. The truth, however, is considerably weirder than either of those options: F.I.L.A. is the name of a “futuristic love angel” from the past (yeah, I’m not sure how that works either), who sparks up a romance with the rapper, a spacefaring adventurer who refers to himself as “the black Buzz Lightyear.” The time travelers’ romance is passionate, but short-lived; ultimately, their feelings for one another aren’t enough to bridge the temporal gap, and their love meets a bittersweet end. So yeah, it’s a little out there – whether or not you can wrap your heard around the spaced-out premise, though, the combo of Jinx’s witty rhyme style and producer Adrian McKennon‘s dreamy boardwork makes for an appealingly strange experience. There is a lot to like on Jinx' Booth debut. His vocals command your attention, his creativity is evident a few bars into the song, and his production selection (in this case) is excellent (props to McKennon). I get a little lost in the chorus, but all-in-all this is an intriguing listen.

I'm feeling this shit right here!! A concept which a lot of cats forgot about these days And he ain't afraid to try something different on this and I like. Only thing I felt the beat was cool but it sounded kinda repetitive, like if it had some more break downs in it or different drums. But overall hot joint!

I like concept records because of the creative element, and this has that. The production fits well with the song, and has a catchy hook. All the ingredients are there for success.

A really impressive debut - Jinx definitely has some potential to go big if he can keep turning out original lyrics and concepts like this. Not sure about the hook, but otherwise on point. Let's hear some more from the man.

With this flurry of artists I see, it's easy to overlook the Booth newcomers. That said, Jinx definitely makes his point here. I'm only giving a 3 because I believe the best is yet to come.
