Jermaine Dupri - I Heard Um Say
Artist: Jermaine Dupri
Producer: Jermaine Dupri
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: So So Def
Could it really be?! Nobody’s flipped the White Stripes’ ‘03 smash, Seven Nation Army, into a hit hip-hop record? (Unless something’s totally slipped my mind, that is.) Here to rectify this sad state of affairs is musical jack-of-all-trades Jermaine Dupri with his latest single, I Heard Um Say. As usual, J.D. makes full use of his skills on both sides on the boards – over a chanted rendition of the genius riff that’s become our generation’s Smoke on the Water (that is to say, anyone can pick up a guitar or bass and play it with minimal practice), the So So Def heavyweight asks everyone in the spot step out onto the floor immediately. Lyrically, the man keeps things simple and energetic, spitting braggadocious, high-rolling game to a shawty at the local spot: “I’ve got the biggest house on the biggest side of town / Baby girl, you can call me Ric… Flair!” Will this track serve its intended purpose and pack club dancefloors across the nation? I’ll let you decide. In any case, J.D. devotees will want to keep it locked for details on the artist’s forthcoming full-length, which has yet to receive a title or solid release date.

When discussing the all-time production greats in hip-hop and R&B, people seldom bring up the name Jermaine Dupri. I am not sure why. The man is responsible for an insane amount of hit acts and singles and he hasn't gone anywhere in nearly 20+ years. This new club-ready banger should prove once again that J.D. has not lost a beat (pun intended).

I'll second DJ N, best track from him in a WHILE. I was hopin to hear a little guitar sample, but the essence of the classic rock track is here and dope as ever. The production is a little thin, but the energy and catchy vibe makes this a popular track to be.

JD has always been one of the top people in the Hip Hop game but his name doesn't come up as much as it should. Nonetheless "I Heard Um Say" is a great song but nothing that will change the game either, 3 1/2 stars rounded up.

JD's work is still pretty good. Average mic work, but I suppose passable.
In fact, this is the first solo track by JD I've seen aired here on DJBooth.net |

J.D. is one of the best producers than can actually spit, and you don't be looking like why is he rapping besides Kanye...Song is different but definitely hot and catchy. Can't wait for the album.

That's because there's, frankly, a certain element of ridiculousness to the man. Compared to Dre, Premier, etc., J.D.'s always come across as far less serious. However, when it comes to making catchy tracks he's as good as the game's ever seen. I can't say this is up there with his best, but it's another sure to be stuck in your head for hours jam from the man. Respect. |

I like this song but it could have been much better, but I give props to the non guitar element of the song.

Hey its funny that J.D. made his first joint since DFB was still hot. But I kind of agree with Z J.D. been putting down on the production for years.

this is pretty good, but im not much of a fan of the chorus. i think this would serve well as a promo single only to get the buzz up for his possible album.

I've always preferred J.D behind the boards as apose to being on the mic.
