The Pair, the inaugural leak off Jeff Chery‘s forthcoming collaborative mixtape with K. Sparks, found the Booth favorite and exclusive freestyle series alum kicking it old-school while spitting game to two pairs of old-school kicks… or chicks – well, you get the idea. On world premiere numero dos, Gotta Make It, Chery gets back to the grind, and to the spacey sound that’s characterized much of his recent work. Here, the atmospheric synths of producer Sam Sneed set the stage for a double-helping of braggadocious motivational lyricism, liberally laced with the emcee’s trademark allusive wit: “They fake money, so I just leave ‘em as counterfeits / J. don’t kiss, so respect my conglomerate.” L. Jaye, the R&B up-and-comer who enlisted Chery for his first Booth feature nearly a year back, returns the favor here, delivering a street-anthemic hook and a tuneful guest verse. Though this track should only get fans more amped for Luck of the Draw, some may be wondering when they’ll get to hear from JC’s Queens-based cohort. Worry not – the next two leaks will be Sparks-only, and every that then follows will feature both emcees.

I like the ethereal vibe of the beat first & his voice just seals the deal for me. I like this cat. Lyrics are cool too. I wouldn't say he's a lyricist but I'm diggin his tunes. May get some spins on the radio station.

firrrrre!!!!!!!! tracks is really on point, word play is murder, the track sounds like rider music which is something I never heard from Jeff Chery, and the hook very catchy

Considering that Sparks and Cherry are two artists I know made a quality track before I even press play, it's only right that they teamed up. The beat's absolutely hypnotic, and Cherry drops a memorable flow that propels it forward. Chorus doesn't do much for me, but it hardly matters.
@teamblackout - Word is Cherry's in talks with labels now. It's only a matter of time until he blows.

It's not the strongest song or lyrical performance I've heard from Pay$0z, and that hook, which isn't necessarily bad, but perhaps they could try harder to create a hook rather than play to generic type. But if its what we can expect from "Luck of the Draw" (set to include work by K. Sparks), I'm definitely on board.

Damn, I cannot wait for that collaborative tape to hit the net. Jeff Chery like so many others on this site, just does not know how to make a bad song. This track was something special. Production is intense and contains some pretty nice techno/instrumental sounds in the background.
Jeff Chery is a lyrical beast and IMO, the only thing that really brings this track down is the hook. Vocals just sounded a little off to me, but Chery was hot. This was a great song, to say the least. |
