2008 was an excellent year for music, due in large part to the contributions of Philly songstress Jazmine Sullivan with her singles Need U Bad (where she couldn’t get over her man), Bust Your Windows (where she was this close to murdering her man), and Lions, Tigers, and Bears (where she was afraid to love her man). Now, if she’s courting this same gentleman in 2010, her newest single Holding You Down (where she’s discovered her man cheating) indicates she really needs to find a new love, but her pain’s the benefit of us music lovers. Frequent production partner Missy Elliot puts together an audio collage made of various samples - the most prominent being the soft, acoustic, Latin-flavored guitarplay that Nas has also been noted for sampling - but it all blends together to form a beautiful mosaic that’s sure to please any and all who give it a listen. Holding You Down will be featured on Sullivan’s forthcoming sophomore album, Love Me Back, which currently has no set release date. Stay with the Booth for updates.

Jazmine's new single reminds me of something that Lauryn Hill would rock to if she was still, you know, being Lauryn Hill.
Sullivan's vocals are not as sultry/poppish as radio might like them to be, but that is exactly why I like her the way I do. No fluff. Just genuine, heartfelt, and talented singing.

Jazmine is def all bout quality, regardless of whether she is successful on the radio or not. this is jus more proof that her debut wasnt a fluke and shes here to stay. prob the most musically talented female singer on the rise.

Jazmine is dope. but this is not as great as her other singles she had. especially the ones with Salaam Remi.
the beat is also kinda odd to me, why did they have to incorporate like 3-4 different samples!? |

Combine JoshL and Z's comments, Jazzy as one of the best female vocalist's putting out quality music in her own way, and you have the recipe for pure success. Jazmine's soul-drenched, fluttering vocals never grow tired with me.

I loved the songs on Jazmine's first album but this was a little too much. There were so many scratches and samples that it became distracting and hard to focus on Jazzy's voice. She has a great voice and is a talented writer so I'm confident they're will be better music in the future.

I am now throughly convinced that my wifey is incapable of making a bad track...Once again, this BANGS (and shows Missy's definite production skill-heard they did some tracks together for Missy's new album-whenever it drops)
My only dilemma is this: You know how her voice makes my heart melt, but I plan to remix this, and this beat sounds like I should be all "classic hardcore" (eg Dre & Snoop) on the flow...Maybe I can just be "cool" on this beat (cold voice but warm heart). I think this looks like something Home Run Derby should remix...Whaddaya say Mr. Dreams? Mr. Fontaine? |

Oh hells yeah. There's actually like 4 or 5 samples hidden in here - including some MJB and Slick Rick - so production heads should be busy for weeks trying to unravel Missy's beat. And of course Jazmine continues to show she's one of the best voices in the game. Oh hells yeah.

Can we say HOT?! Jazzy has done it again! It's definitely not what I expecte from her but I am pleasantly surprised! People might see Jazmine Sullivan as an underdog but with that voice and her concepts she's bound to be on top one of these days!
