Jay-Z - D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)
Producer: No I.D.
Album: The Blueprint³
Label: Roc Nation
Auto-Tune abuse is sort of like binging on peach Schnapps—the day will come that the music industry will wake up with a massive, pounding headache, lurch into the bathroom, and emerge twelve hours later swearing up and down, “I am never drinking that again.” Until then, though, bottoms up! Jay-Z, for one, has chosen not to partake in the braincell-obliterating festivities, and on this new street single the rap vet rings in the Death of Autotune with a shout of “Good riddance!”. Premiered last Friday on Funkmaster Flex‘s Hot 97 radio program, this track finds Hova teaming up with No I.D. and Kanye West to craft a timely tirade with a timeless sound. The Chi-town greats back Jay’s immortal flow with a guitar-driven beat that becomes unexpectedly poignant with the addition of a heartstring-tugging woodwind sample. For more proof that Jay will be making history long after today’s trends are dead and buried, check out The Blueprint³; dropping on 9/11 (the anniversary of Blueprint‘s release) via Hova’s own Roc Nation label, the LP will be the rapper’s first since buying out his Def Jam contract. Watch for an official radio single featuring Drake to drop in July.

Yes sir! This record is officially EPIC! Loved how Hov came hard on here to re-introduce himself with 100% straight hip hop. Glad the G.O.A.T. can bring hip hop back. Props to Yeezy and No ID for the killer production too.
I think the way to describe this song is simply in the lyrics - "This ain't a number 1 record, this is assault with a deadly weapon." |

The production is SICK!! But what do you expect from these 2 Chi-city legends? The guitar licks are great, the horns are blazin, and they set up Jay's flow very nicely. Jay-Z comes through wit some crazy rhymes. "give this to a Blood, let a Crip walk on it" Oooeeee! Great subject matter. It's been a nice run, auto-tune, but hopefuly your bags are packed! Get em Jay!

He wasn't the 1st to do an anti-autotune song, why all the hype? Just cause he is Jay-Z right? Proves that people dickride too much...good to hear him again tho, but he really sounds kinda lazy on this one. I think this song is overhyped as hell. Couple good lines on it. But overall it's just ok to me at the end of the day

Maybe Hova could have come a little harder, BUT he still had some sick lines, the production was pretty well done, the "Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye" sample was cool and the message pushes it to a 5.
@ Big-A - I don't dick-ride but this just kinda marks the official death of auto-tune when a guy like Hova does it. Not sure how you can hate on it. |

@ Big-A: it doesn't matter if others have tried. NO ONE that made has an anti-autotune attempt has delivered lyrically like this did. And the raw and real hip hop production goes along with the theme in every way possible.

I dunno why, but I just dont think this is good enough to warrant a 5 star (or a 4 star) rating. The production is average while J was patchy through-out the track. In places he sounded great, but in others he sounded pretty poor.

FACT: This is not the death of auto-tune. Even J had planned to use the device on a couple of tracks on The Blueprint 3 but decided against it. Their was even a couple of tracks finished with him using the device. But those have been re-recorded or scrapped according to MTV & Kanye.

I agree with Aussie_Pride. This track is not that great at all. I don't like the production; it doesn't fit the song at all, although I do like the instrumentals. Sounds like a composition from John Mackey. True, the topic is sound; the fact that too many people are taking away from what the amazing T-Pain coined is getting a little rediculous. I just think that the song could have been a lot better. A LOT better.

"I know we facing a recession, but the music y’all making going make it the great depression" XD Nice!
"you boys jeans too tight, you colors too bright, your voice too light" - 0_o uhmm... didn't Kanye prove already you can still make great music despite all that? Let's not forget that there's nothing wrong with the tool, but instead the fools who jump on it like mercenaries. Bassline, GUITAR & HORNS... GREAT! |

DAMN!!! (Imma be witnessing History on booth today)
Dont even know where to begin with ... Its only fitting to say, Thank god somebody in as high a position as Jay had the cojones to come out & say this ... He gave a hint of this with the Put On Remix (murdered that shit) ... This concept could’ve been done by thousands of rappers, but it would never mean as much as it just did .... DAMN!!!! No I.D. deserves a NOBEL for creating such a spectacular beat that takes one back to the days of intelligent & experimental beat construction .... u hear that guitar & horns… Woooh ... And Hova spits no holds-barred verses with razor WIT & flow to match .... Punchlines, effective wordplay & caustic charm are on display throughout this legendary opus ... Co-sign @FredRico - "Let's not forget that there's nothing wrong with the tool, but instead the fools who jump on it like mercenaries" ... Most of the rappers I’ve heard using Auto-Tune were T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Kanye West are actually good at being ARTISTS .... While others like Ron Browz, Yung Berg, Zoe etc. etc. THEY SUCK at being ARTISTS! I mean, Jay is one of my favorite rappers ever ... To say Jay is the GROAT is not a stretch ... BUT I bet you T-Pain will still have a hit after all this! ... Autotune will die when people stop supporting it thats all .... Eventually, at the end of the day Stanning for T-Pain (& Yeezy) >>>> Stanning for Jay-Z .... LOLs. |

Damn DJZ! I guess us DJbooth Crew heads think alike! I don't get all the hype this song is getting either. That beat is really sick and I like the way it changes throughout. Jay-Z is normal-nice on this one, nothing really crazy, but just good all-around Jay-Z. I think the title of the song makes it more intriguing than it really is, causing more attention, which is a great way to create a buzz so I can't hate. Its just not that catchy to me, and I personally like the autotune...Oh well. He is still gonna have to come harder than this for me to LOVE the Blueprint 3!

@DJ Z - Hmmm.....I may have to disagree with you on that last one. Not only did autotune make 808's, but it also made it a CLASSIC album, at least in this man's opinion. That's probably the only case it applies to, however; you almost hit the nail on that one. I just personally feel as if 808's wouldn't havve been near as good if it weren't done with autotune.

I dont think the general population has any idea what auto tune is about to be honest. Most people in Australia (I cant use the U.S as a example) think that T-Pain just sounds like that all the time, so us blaming the general population for this obsession isnt justified
I personally blame all these 'creative' artist who felt that using the machine would guarantee the selling of records. The only guy (besides T-Pain) that has made auto tune work is Kanye West (and to a degree Weezy & Gorrila Zoe (Yes I cant believe I said that either)). FINAL NOTE: This auto-tune craze has been greatly over-hyped, I dont think it was ever a major problem to be honest. |

OK, I think some logical input is necessary right about now.
This songs aight. It's by no means a bad song, but seriously some of y'all are hyping it way too much. It's a very nice idea for a song, no doubt, BUT bottom line is it's a mediocre song at best. Jay-Z always delivers on the track, and yeah I really enjoyed some of the lines in here, but it's essentially all repetition of the same theme. And, another thing. We are the generation of auto tune! The widespread use and popularity of autotune was sparked by T-Pain and the constant stream of billboard topping hits he released in the mid 2000s. "Low" was the one song that I believe ultimately changed the face of hip-hop. That song was so excessively popular, that it caused other artists to re-evaluate their rapping techniques. Right after "Low" we saw a sudden explosion of autotune in the hip hop industry. Lil' Wayne is infamous for his recent use of autotune now, and his success with the smash hit "lollipop". Because of this, the autotune has now become a common element in many chart-topping hip hop songs. Is it unoriginal? Yeah, it's really old by now. BUT, does it sound good? Hell yeah! Any song that uses the autotune effectively can be a banger for sure. Now the effective use is what people like Jay-Z are getting upset about. So many well known artists are opting out of their old rapping way and are giving this whole "auto tune thing" a shot. And as long as they are successful, this song will mean nothing. That's not to say, the auto tune won't get old, but music evolves whether you like it or not. And although Jay-Z had a great idea with this song, he fails to recognize the evolution of hip hop. 2000s hip hop isn't about delivering insane lyrics and punch lines. We are part of the itunes generation, and because of the easy access of music via the internet, the public demands something that is appealing to listen to. And, let's face it, whether you personally believe it or not, the autotune is an appealing technique, and it will make anybodys voice sound good. I pesonally like the auto tune technique. I was skeptical at first when artists like Kanye, Wayne, and Gorilla Zoe started using it, but the music they are making is appealing to the masses. So, whether we like it or not, we are stuck here and possibly for a while until the public snaps out of this phase. Nice try though Jay-Z! |

This might go down as the attack track of the year, and its intriguing how one artist can shake thousands of bandwagon, gold rushing bitin ass halfhearted artists...Jay went hard to the core with this one...ala "Takeover" ~1~

Professor Elm, you pretty much hit the nail on what you just said, agree with you 100%. Once they get that auto-tune into a banger hit, you have your hit single, and hey even I enjoy it. I didn't think I would enjoy Gorliia Zoe but I did love some of his tracks from 'Don't Feed the Animals' like 'Echo', 'I Got It' & 'Lost'. I don't really mind em' experimenting, just as long as the WHOLE industry doesn't get hyped up over it in the next 10 years, which I'm pretty sure wont happen, like they say, music evolves, there's no stooping that.
I do love the song though, catchy beat, great ol' Jay Z flo, 4 stars from Aussie! |

KRS ONE & BUCKSHOTS' SONG - ROBOT, Is a much better analysis of what is happnin in music right about now. BECAUSE IT IS TRUE, AT THE MOMENT A LOT OF ARTISTS ARE ROBOTS, THEY FOLLOW THE 'TREND'.
C'mon be serious aint no-one gon stop autotune fully. This a cool sinlge to gain buzz, but not Jy's best. |
