Jay-Z - D.O.A. (Death of Autotune)
Artist: Jay-Z
Producer: No I.D.
Album: The Blueprint³
Label: Roc Nation/Universal Music Group
Auto-Tune abuse is sort of like binging on peach Schnapps—the day will come that the music industry will wake up with a massive, pounding headache, lurch into the bathroom, and emerge twelve hours later swearing up and down, “I am never drinking that again.” Until then, though, bottoms up! Jay-Z, for one, has chosen not to partake in the braincell-obliterating festivities, and on this new street single the rap vet rings in the Death of Autotune with a shout of “Good riddance!”. Premiered last Friday on Funkmaster Flex‘s Hot 97 radio program, this track finds Hova teaming up with No I.D. and Kanye West
to craft a timely tirade with a timeless sound. The Chi-town greats back Jay’s immortal flow with a guitar-driven beat that becomes unexpectedly poignant with the addition of a heartstring-tugging woodwind sample. For more proof that Jay will be making history long after today’s trends are dead and buried, check out The Blueprint³; dropping on 9/11 (the anniversary of Blueprint‘s release) via Hova’s own Roc Nation label, the LP will be the rapper’s first since buying out his Def Jam contract. Watch for an official radio single featuring Drake to drop in July.

Yes sir! This record is officially EPIC! Loved how Hov came hard on here to re-introduce himself with 100% straight hip hop. Glad the G.O.A.T. can bring hip hop back. Props to Yeezy and No ID for the killer production too.
I think the way to describe this song is simply in the lyrics - "This ain't a number 1 record, this is assault with a deadly weapon." |

The production is SICK!! But what do you expect from these 2 Chi-city legends? The guitar licks are great, the horns are blazin, and they set up Jay's flow very nicely. Jay-Z comes through wit some crazy rhymes. "give this to a Blood, let a Crip walk on it" Oooeeee! Great subject matter. It's been a nice run, auto-tune, but hopefuly your bags are packed! Get em Jay!

I like the sample on this song, and im glad jay-z's album is coming soon. But i still like auto=tune thats why im glad i heard the remix "rebirth of autotune" where they autotuned this track haha, but this song is sick.

He wasn't the 1st to do an anti-autotune song, why all the hype? Just cause he is Jay-Z right? Proves that people dickride too much...good to hear him again tho, but he really sounds kinda lazy on this one. I think this song is overhyped as hell. Couple good lines on it. But overall it's just ok to me at the end of the day

Maybe Hova could have come a little harder, BUT he still had some sick lines, the production was pretty well done, the "Na Na Na Na Hey Hey Hey Goodbye" sample was cool and the message pushes it to a 5.
@ Big-A - I don't dick-ride but this just kinda marks the official death of auto-tune when a guy like Hova does it. Not sure how you can hate on it. |

@ Big-A: it doesn't matter if others have tried. NO ONE that made has an anti-autotune attempt has delivered lyrically like this did. And the raw and real hip hop production goes along with the theme in every way possible.

I'll co-sign my man GStan10... @BigA: Jay-Z is such a big voice in the industry that this is a huge statement, although I was feelin MANY other anti-autotune tracks, and I'm just excited to see if this track catches on.

I dunno why, but I just dont think this is good enough to warrant a 5 star (or a 4 star) rating. The production is average while J was patchy through-out the track. In places he sounded great, but in others he sounded pretty poor.

Sidebar - It's interesting that Kanye produced this (his last album being filled with auto-tune). Just something I noticed.

Blueprint 3 will be so dope! This is a classic Hova track. Great production from 2 great producers and Jay-Z flows well. A lot of quotable lines from him the whole vibe of this song is amazing! Classic!

FACT: This is not the death of auto-tune. Even J had planned to use the device on a couple of tracks on The Blueprint 3 but decided against it. Their was even a couple of tracks finished with him using the device. But those have been re-recorded or scrapped according to MTV & Kanye.

I agree with Aussie_Pride. This track is not that great at all. I don't like the production; it doesn't fit the song at all, although I do like the instrumentals. Sounds like a composition from John Mackey. True, the topic is sound; the fact that too many people are taking away from what the amazing T-Pain coined is getting a little rediculous. I just think that the song could have been a lot better. A LOT better.

"I know we facing a recession, but the music y’all making going make it the great depression" XD Nice!
"you boys jeans too tight, you colors too bright, your voice too light" - 0_o uhmm... didn't Kanye prove already you can still make great music despite all that? Let's not forget that there's nothing wrong with the tool, but instead the fools who jump on it like mercenaries. Bassline, GUITAR & HORNS... GREAT! |

damn i was not impressed at all this average jay z beat is ok and jay does have some good punch lines in there but it does not save the song from just being average
why are you all giving it 5 stars just because he had a good idea for a song and yes ill give him that it is a great idea but just a average track |

DAMN!!! (Imma be witnessing History on booth today)
Dont even know where to begin with ... Its only fitting to say, Thank god somebody in as high a position as Jay had the cojones to come out & say this ... He gave a hint of this with the Put On Remix (murdered that shit) ... This concept could’ve been done by thousands of rappers, but it would never mean as much as it just did .... DAMN!!!! No I.D. deserves a NOBEL for creating such a spectacular beat that takes one back to the days of intelligent & experimental beat construction .... u hear that guitar & horns… Woooh ... And Hova spits no holds-barred verses with razor WIT & flow to match .... Punchlines, effective wordplay & caustic charm are on display throughout this legendary opus ... Co-sign @FredRico - "Let's not forget that there's nothing wrong with the tool, but instead the fools who jump on it like mercenaries" ... Most of the rappers I’ve heard using Auto-Tune were T-Pain, Lil Wayne, Kanye West are actually good at being ARTISTS .... While others like Ron Browz, Yung Berg, Zoe etc. etc. THEY SUCK at being ARTISTS! I mean, Jay is one of my favorite rappers ever ... To say Jay is the GROAT is not a stretch ... BUT I bet you T-Pain will still have a hit after all this! ... Autotune will die when people stop supporting it thats all .... Eventually, at the end of the day Stanning for T-Pain (& Yeezy) >>>> Stanning for Jay-Z .... LOLs. |

I loved it, and I love how he brought back the feel of the old school days. I would definitely not say this track is a classic, but it's easily a banger. I can't wait to see what else Jay has in store for us now. He had some great punchlines in here as well.

Jay z is normally, to me, the most over rated over hyped rap artist of all time.. but I like this song.. more for the message/lyrics than for it being a J song. First song from Jay since Big Pimpin that I can listen to more than once.

HOPEFULLY, WITH (EM, JADA, METH, RED...Etc & NOW JAY) THE SOUND OF REAL MUSIC FROM REAL ARTISTS IS BACK AND WITH THE SUPPORT (Not Bootleg) LABELS WILL UNDERSTAND...EVERY SONG DOESN'T HAVE TO BE A STUPID AZZ DANCE AND EVERY SONG DOESN'T NEED STUPID AZZ AUTO-TUNE TO DO NUMBERS.

Damn DJZ! I guess us DJbooth Crew heads think alike! I don't get all the hype this song is getting either. That beat is really sick and I like the way it changes throughout. Jay-Z is normal-nice on this one, nothing really crazy, but just good all-around Jay-Z. I think the title of the song makes it more intriguing than it really is, causing more attention, which is a great way to create a buzz so I can't hate. Its just not that catchy to me, and I personally like the autotune...Oh well. He is still gonna have to come harder than this for me to LOVE the Blueprint 3!

love hov, and concept is great, but this will not kill autotune forever. it could quiet the use of it down though. this is a statement track to the game, but not a declaration...u honestly think ron browz and them will just quit using it? also @ mr top hat i resent the gorilla zoe jab, he's better than most at the autotune and uses it only on a couple tracks

talkin about Jay I was researching his history back with Biggie and couldn't stop thinkin' how talented he was (and still is) This is so CLASSIC it just is. The message was very good but not only that, his production just reminds of his old skool ish. It is a pleasure to hear him in my presence. I'm very eager to see how Blueprint III will turn out to be.
