Jay Electronica - Exhibit C
Artist: Jay Electronica
Producer: Just Blaze
Album: Promo Single
Label: Roc Nation/Columbia
November 4, 2008: a day that will go down in history. The day Exhibit A (Transformations) was featured at DJBooth.net. Well, OK, the electing-our-first-African-American-president thing may slightly eclipse Jay Electronica‘s first Booth feature, but the track was still pretty damned dope, as was Mickey Factz’ recent freestyled revamp. Jay’s new promo single) Exhibit C, previously leaked as a radio rip but presented here in its finished form, has a considerably more soulful feel than A. That’s thanks in part to Just Blaze‘s densely-layered beat (sampled from Billy Stewart’s ‘67 ballad Cross My Heart), and in part to the headliner’s more personal verses, which find him recounting how he went from sleeping on trains “without a slice of pizza to [his] name” to hob-nobbing with the likes of Nas and Diddy. This nostalgically fresh jam is available now for purchase at iTunes, and fans should keep it locked to the Booth for all the latest from Jay Electronica (a.k.a. Jay ElectHannukah, Electyarmulke, ElectRamadan…).

Sorry.. but this production is fire. Reminds me of the production that he did on the Kanye and Nas track. Solid flow, and a shoutout to Angela Yee/Lord Sear from SHADE 45. Hot.

@The 149th - How is this garbage?? That production work is top-notch, and the intro was fitting.
Jay definitely impressed me with this. The overall song was really well done. |

I will agree The 149th that the intro is pretty long, but with a track like this you have to let it breathe a bit. Definitely some extraordinary mic work from Jay, and this is one of Blaze's most soulful beats in recent memory. It's basically impossible to f**k with this.

How is this not hot? Obviously one of the best songs of the year, and probably the only radio rip I've seen paid so much attention to from bloggers.

What the fcuk is a Jay-Electronica???
Man who spits, "They call me Jay Electronica/@*#$! that! Call me Jay Elec Hannukah/Jay Elec yamulka/Jay Elect Ramadan Muhammad asalamulaka Rasoullah la subhana wa ta Allah through your monitor...", in a rap verse to make the real life Israeli/Palestinian conflict seem like a petty fight over legos. If simple, yet elaborate cultural/religious references can co-exist as easily and beautiful as this, then I'm sure that peace in that region can. Oh yeah, more power to you @The 149th. Intro is what Just Blaze gives you almost a minute, giving you time to settle in cos once Jay ElectHannukah started spitting, you can't jump off until the end but you'll be glad you took the ride. |

When I was sleeping on the train,
Sleeping on Meserole Ave out in the rain, Without even a single slice of pizza to my name, Too proud to beg for change mastering the pain, When NY n!ggas was calling southern rappers lame, But then jackin' our slang, I used to get dizzy spells, hear a little ring, The voice of a angel telling me my name, Telling me that one day Imma be a great man, Transforming with the MegatronDon spittin' out flames Eatin' wack rappers alive sh!ttin out chains, I ain,t believe it then, n!gga I was homeless, Fightin, shootin dice, smoking weed on the corners Tryna' find the meaning of life in a corona, Till the 5%ers rolled up on a n!gga and informed him. "You either build or destroy, where you come from?" "The Magnolia projects in the 3rd ward slum" "Hmm, its quite amazing that you rhyme how you do And how you shine like you grew up in a shrine in Peru." Question 14 Muslim lesson 2: Dip diver, civilize a 85er I make the devil hit his knees and say the our father Abracadabra! You rockin' with the true and living Shout out to Light Out, Joseph I, Chewy Bivens, Shout out to Baltimore, Baton Rouge, my crew in Richmond While y'all debated who's the truth like Jews and Christians I was in Cecil B, Broad St, Master, North Philly, South Philly, 23rd, Tasker 6 Mile, 7 Mile, Hartwell, Gratiot Where n!ggas really would pack a U-haul truck up Put the high beams on Drive up on the curb at a barbeque and hop out the back like "whats up" "Kill a n!gga, rob a n!gga, take a n!gga, buss up" That's why when you talk that tough talk I never feel ya, You sound real good and you play the part well, But the energy you givin' off is so unfamiliar, I don't feel ya. Nas hit me up on the phone said "what you waitin' on" TIP hit me up on a twitt said "what you waitin on" Diddy send a text every hour on the dot sayin' "when you gon' drop that verse n!gga you takin long" So now I'm back spittin that He could pass a polygraph, That Rev Run rockin Addidas out on Hollis Ave That FOI, Marcus Garvey, Nikki Tesla I shock you like a eel, electric feel, Jay Electra. I'm going to see him at The Fillmore on the 28th and I know the place is going to get crazy when he drops this. "Givin' out that raw food to Lions disguised as Lambs" His talent in overly apparent over this Blaze beat. And even if it's not his best work the beat in no way hinders the message.

This beat has been pretty popular lately and it's no surprise. Jay absolutely brought Just Blaze's production to justice with the sick wordplay and rhymes.
Hahaha.. Erykah Badu only hooks up with the best rappers in hip-hop (Hello, Common & Andre 3 Stacks). Anyways, 4.5/5 |
