Jay Electronica - Call Of Duty (Modern Warfare)
Featuring: Mobb Deep
Producer: Jay Electronica
Album: None (Promo Single)
Label: Roc Nation/Columbia
While I don’t follow the massively popular Modern Warfare series, a quick Google search assures me that the latest entry, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 3, is poised to utterly revolutionize the console gaming industry when it drops Nov. 8. Considering that hip-hop heads seem to harbor similar hope vis-à-vis Jay Electronica‘s impact on the rap game, it’s quite appropriate that the underground mainstay takes inspiration from the massively hyped title on the latest single off his Roc Nation debut. Here, Elec’s martial sample work (mixed by Young Guru, and led off with a rousing snippet of Winston Churchill’s Trinity Sunday speech) sets the moods as the headliner marshals his forces to mobilize for change: “We can heal the planet with an organized effort / The Jews and the Christians and the Muslims and the Buddhists and the Sikhs and Scientologists is all of my brethren.” Mobb Deep‘s Prodigy acts as Jay’s Lieutenant General, lending his deadpan vocals to the guest verses and hook. How about it, readers: are you ready and willing to follow Jay Elec into battle? Then stay tuned for further details on the artist’s long-awaited studio album, Act II: Patents of Nobility (The Turn).

This production is Bananas! The beat goes hard as hell right here. Jay Electronica killed the versus just right and Prodigy kills the chorus. Easily a BANGER and almost a Classic... 4.5

I have to disagree with my boy DJ Blaze here, I cant stand the beat here. That sound effect is overused, I think it comes with the fruity loops production software. Jay Elec met my expectations tho, its a tough verse.

For an artist that shows its head so dramatically, so rarely, "Call Of Duty" is a letdown.
Like many, my first few listens were also filled with disappointment because song is more naked in terms of lyrics. The abstract-minded lyricism felt toned down. Though I have to admit, the more I listen to the verses, the more it gives back to me. As expected, lyrics are remarkably well-written, making up for the lack of a connection with dull vocal performances from both Jay and Prodigy. I know, this sounds quite alright in theory, but in practice the results are just a tad on the disappointing side. Yes, it's not his best, and it doesn't have that Exhibition A/C "wow" factor, either. But it still is pretty damn great and Jay Electronica-Just Blaze standard output easily outpaces most of their contemporaries. Most rappers would kill to have a song as good as this in their oeuvre. Rating this song was difficult. Lyrically it naturally earned a high mark, but that is only half the formula. Purely based on lyrics and not delivery it still might also earn a high mark, but ultimately the near-repulsive instrumental limits its replay value. Rating: 3.5 stars, rounded up. This being a mid-recording throwaway release (according to Jay's tumblr post), I hope whatever follows "Call Of Duty" to scrap every ounce of sentiment found here, re-introducing how phenomenal the pair's output can be when they tick all the boxes. |

Jay is impressive as usual, but something feels a little off. I feel like it takes a couple of listens to really have an accurate take on any of Jay's work. One thing is for sure, Jay has a nose for samples. Tracks from Jay are few and far between, but when he releases something, you know it will be high caliber hip hop..

Seeing the names on the track, immediately I thought this would be at least a banger...boy was I disappointed. I'm not feeling this beat at all. The lyrics were pretty good but I definitely wouldn't put this in rotation. In fact, the only time I'd listen to it again is when I'm playing MW3
