Jason Derulo - Don't Wanna Go Home
Artist: Jason Derulo
Producer: The Fliptones
Album: Future History
Label: Warner Bros. Records Inc.
It’s practically a law of pop physics that, when an urban-music heavyweight has a hit using a particular sample, other artists and producers will jump on the source material, hoping to secure their own piece of the action. Even so, I assumed Harry Belafonte’s Banana Boat Song, previously flipped by Bangladesh on Weezy‘s 6’7” was too eccentric a selection to inspire another smash. Guess I was (potentially) wrong. On Don’t Wanna Go Home, the lead single off Jason Derulo‘s forthcoming sophomore set, the Beluga Heights/Warner Bros singer and production crew The Fliptones pair Belafonte’s “Day-o…” chorus with a scorching groove drawn from Robin S’ ‘93 dance classic, Show Me Love, in hopes of striking club-pop gold. While the premise is relatively boilerplate – Derulo’s at the local spot, enjoying the company of fine females and he doesn’t wanna leave – the record’s energy is palpable, and I see no reason why it shouldn’t have the club jumping “from the windows, to the walls.” (to quote Derulo quoting Lil Jon). If you this think single is more than the sum of its parts, keep it locked for all the latest on Future History, which has yet to receive a release date.

Oh, Jason. Why do I get the feeling this song was previously pitched to Sean Kingston? To my ear, this has the influence of JR Rotem written all over it. Which is both good (its catchy) and bad (its overdone, and more than slightly corny). With all that said, it will probably be a Top 10 hit and sell a bizillion digital singles. Oy.

Jason has another hit on his hands- could use a bit more melodic backdrop though; it sounds a bit bland and falls flat in terms of production (beat still bangs though), and in vocal pitch.

I can't believe that his music is changing so dramatically. It will be a major hit and will sell millions, but this is not even close to "Whatcha Say".

Why O Why do I like this song!!! I want to hate this generic pop music but because they used the sample of the hit "Show Me Love" i cant help but like it. Damn my love for old school pop music, SMH...

This song will be a hit. People remember that beat and the hook is pretty catchy. I already heard it on the radio last night actually. I kinda know that it'll grow on me personally. By the time summer is in full swing this will be getting so overplayed.

While I found Jason's debut album to be really, really enjoyable (and have listened to it for more than just a couple of times, front to back), I seriously doubt that his sophomore effort will be anything like it. I think we can expect a lot more generic, Guetta-like cuts where this came from...

Derulo knows how to make hits. This is no different. This will be a club/party track, but it's still not his best. It's pretty generic, it doesn't really pop out at all. Not awful, but not a great effort either.

Wack. Not sure why this would ever be a single. If this was sung by pretty much any other artist we'd all be listening for 15 seconds and calling this track wack.

Derulo has potential as an artist, but I was kind of expecting a mediocre song from him, and in that regard I guess I wasn't disappointed. The production is flat out tacky, and the lyrics, although they have a slight theme, just don't really go anywhere. The song also seems stale for interpolating the banana boat song, which Lil Wayne already did recently.
