Jarren Benton - Fire [Premiere]
Artist: Jarren Benton
Producer: Erick Sermon
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: Funk Volume
Would you believe that a whole damn year has passed since last we featured ATL up-and-comer Jarren Benton? I just looked it up, and I’m not sure I even believe it. For proof that his creative Fire is still burning as brightly as it was back then, fans need simply listen to this inaugural mixtape leak, making its world premiere right here in the Booth. The legendary Erick Sermon mans the boards on this old-school-informed banger, cooking up a blazing-hot sampled instrumental complete with startling (but thematically-appropriate) siren sound effects. Benton brings a comparable level of intensity on the mic – when he’s not bombarding the track with flame-related puns, he’s dropping allusive, free-associative lines like, “I’m weird like Bee-york (Björk) / I don’t eat pee-ork / on some other sh*t like I’m Malachi Z. York.” So, Booth readers, is this track as hot as its title suggests? I think I know the answer, but I’ll let you have the final say. If you’re digging it, keep it locked for details on Benton’s as yet-untitled, forthcoming project, which will be A&Red, hosted and presented by DJBooth.net..

Wow. I, too, cannot believe its been a whole year since last Jarren stepped foot into the Booth for a feature. If you're going to come back in a big way, though, "Fire" is a great start. The energy is infections, the rhymes are off-the-wall fresh and the production matches everything perfectly.
If you find this enjoyable, just wait... there is much much MUCH more on the way. |

I don't think the title does this track justice. Jarren was okay at best. Found myself drifting after the first minute. Some of his punchlines were really weak and the production can only go on for so long without getting annoying. Back to the drawing boards Jarren Benton. 2.5

Woah! Don't change tracks just yet. Verse 2 is 1000x times better than the first. And the third is nothing weak. Overall, with this production, we've got a banger

Won't go out and say the rhymes really got me, kinda cheesy to me. I like the hook cause it pumps the adrenaline lol. Brings good flow, but not the biggest fan of his voice and there were a lot of distractions (bombs exploding, screaming, alarms). Wasn't blown away 2.5 at best.

I too agree with @RyanSx. I also thought the production was a little loud, and sorta covered up his voice.

Agree that the second verse was an improvement... Verses and flow are solid but I wasn't really feeling the basic production. 2.5

@ASB - The production loudness was, I believe, on purpose because of its theme and the high-energy nature of the record. If you feel like that drowned out Benton's vocals, that might just be a mixing issue.

I could have done without the sirens and alarms. I wouldn't call this fire more like a slow burning glow. I appreciate his consistent energy and the subtle Slim Shady quote but Jarren didn't sell me as an artist was burning my speakers.

Agree with the other commenters, the vocals are too low. Other than that, its a solid track. A real solid hook

Sorry Z, but all we have to judge is the product in our headphones. Whether it's a mixing issue, or because Jarren didn't bring quite as much energy to his vocals as he could have, the result's the same.
Hot, sparking, simmering, but not fully en fuego. |

Beat is hot. His flow is tight, would be better if his voice wasn't so high pitched.

Great way to comeback to the DJBooth for Jarren Benton. I was digging the songs his songs that were previously featured on here so I'm glad he's back! The beat is gritty and hard-hitting which I like. His aggression on his lyrics takes it to another level and his punchlines are crazy hot!
Hopefully his voice tone can improve over time because it sounds like his voice range is really short on the mic. Great overall song, nonetheless. |

This is an Erick Sermon produced record?Benton's rhymes are above average, but the production & mix are both well below par.

Jarren Benton has a good track record here at booth and this performance too is highly above average, but its just a tad too repetitive on production tip.

FIRE!
I’ve never heard of this guy before, but he’s dope and he has to be if Erick Sermon produced the track. But when people mention the greatest producers of all time most of them forget about Sermon. |
