Jared Evan is many things – a Zone 4/Interscope signee, a DJBooth Freestyle alum, one hell of a good interview subject – but first and foremost he’s consistent. Over the last year it’s hard to remember a month that’s gone by without a new Evan song coming through our inboxes and we can now say the same for August with the release of Ice Cream (unCovered). Don’t worry, Evan isn’t paying homage to Gucci Mane’s face ink, instead he’s interpolating Wu-Tang’s classic money making anthem. His work behind the boards here is mellow, lightly distorted and softly experimental, humming in the background and only barely climbing on the chorus. He enhances that mood on the vocals, delivering his rewind-worthy lines through what sounds like a cell phone with bad reception, giving Ice Cream a melted (get it?) and vaguely haunting quality. Cash may rule everything around us, but genre-bending hip-hop clearly rules everything around Evan. No release date yet for his upcoming unCOVERED album, so in the meantime why not stream and download his Back and Fourth album right here on DJBooth?

I've been a fan of Jared Evan since "Falling Down." He's always got something new. It's interesting how he did this one. It's so different from the original.

Jared is a friggin rock star waiting to blow up. 99% of all artists would absolutely butcher the classics that he has "un"covered the past few months... with ease. His production work, in this case, is almost more impressive than his minimalistic vocal delivery, which suits the music perfectly. Method Man would be proud.

Interesting track. Very experimental. It's ok, but it lacks the rawness and the energy that the original had. If you are gonna tackle a big track like that, you really have to nail it, and he didn't quite do so.

That was a horrific cover. This is definitely for the new fans of hip hop. Sounds more like an attempt to take a popular style (Drake) and earn some credibility off a classic. You should never try to water down Wu-tang or any other classic joint...next thing you know someone will try a vocal cover of "Shook Ones"! Good try but regroup and try again.

People who are hatin on this song don't get JE. He is helping to realize what has been true for some time: hip hop is the post-modern music movement. As hard as indie tries, pretentious doesn't mean you fit a philosophical movement. However using samples in an informed but unique way fits a worldview many of our generation have grown up on almost unknowingly. JE brings this concept to the head of his music by taking classic records by bands that have fans with rabid opinions, such as Wu or the Beatles for recent examples, and challenging us to see them beyond the original records. He uses them as sonic doorways toward his own stylings. Controversial: yes, weak attempts at cashing in on the popularity of those he samples: not at all. With all that said, this wasn't my joint but I can see why others enjoy it.

nicely done! I'm surprised hear how an old time classic "Ice Cream" to be transfer into a smooth mellow beat.
