Please know that I don’t say this lightly, but Janelle Monae might be the most original voice in hip-hop/r&b/pop/whatever genre you place her in. If you’ve never heard the small but explosively creative Monae before, you don’t have to look further than her new track Come Alive (The War of the Roses) for a taste of her musical abilities. Part doo-wop, part punk, part Violent Femmes-esque rock opera, Come Alive is unlike anything you’ve ever heard before, an explosion of sound with Monae’s always strong vocals leading the charge. Or as Janelle herself says on the track, when she comes alive she’s like a “schizo running wild.” Frankly, I’d have to agree. War of the Roses is the first release off Kia Motor’s new Soul Collective series, while Monae’s Metropolis Suites II & III are tentatively scheduled to drop sometime this year. Stay tuned to DJBooth.net for all the latest from both projects.

One of the most unqiuely talented individuals in the industry right now. She has style, charisma, sass, and energy and all these qualities are on display here. This is what urban music was - originally.

Something throws me off. I just don't like to hear out of sudden unnecessary yelling/screaming in songs. I’ll have to give it a few more listens.

Definitely an accquired taste, but Monae's just absolutely on another planet right now. The closest comparison would be Andre 3K, and in terms of versatility she's actually got more than him (her voice is incredible). See her live, just do it. It's an experience.

Real big Janelle Monae fan. She's in a category all to her own and isn't afraid to do something new and different. She does yell a bit too much here, but still a solid track.

Didn't expect to find a rock song here. It's cool but she screams a lil too much for my tastes. She sounds kinda punk/hysterical

Interesting. Placing in a genre you would be hard pressed. They need a better head shot as she looks like an 8 year old boy. Not something I would rock song wise... but gotta give credit to the skill displayed.

"Like a schizo running wild!"..I love this song. For some reason, I can totally hear this track playing in the background of a Quentin Tarantino movie. The high energy, the amazing vocals, the mash-up of different genres...Janelle continues not to disappoint.
