In a recent DJBooth interview former king of the charts Ja Rule promised that he would be returning to his former glory soon…what’s that? That interview was all the way back in November of ’07? Damn, it really has been a minute. Well, Ja is nothing if not persistent, and six years after the release of his last studio album, and eight years since his last platinum album, Rule is back with his new warm up single The Life. On The Life producer Lofey sets the stage with a bubbly beat made for radio (shades of Mesmerize anyone?), while vocally the still rough voiced Rule pays tribute to the finer things in life, namely money and women, a combination topped off by some sweet if not particularly remarkable vocals from Kevin Ross on the hook. So how about it Booth? Is Rule on his way back to the top? We’ll find out for sure when (or should I say if?) his new album VvV 2010, a reference to his debut album Venni Vitti Vicci, drops soon.

If the goal was to "come back" strong after all this time away, using "The Life" as that vehicle... Rule failed. This is not on the level of any of his past hits and when you are away for a long time, you need to come back stronger. I can only hope that a real single (they call this a "buzz record") with more to offer follows.

Agree with Z 100%, this would have been subpar AT BEST in 2005. This Kevin Ross dude was mad weak on the vocals, and Ja Rule has not changed at all.

Aside from that, if his label could go back into a time machine, they would have had a #1 record with "Free," the track he released 3 years ago but never was picked up as a single. I fear now all hope is gone.

Agree with Z too. I know you should never give up on someone but honestly I feel Ja's career is over and his glory days are WAY behind him.

If he keeps this up, he MAY have hope at being on top again, this is a nice teaser of what's to come. I need some classic Ja right now!

Ja got steamrolled by his production. He usually has enough charisma to own a track like this, but he seemed timid and lost.

For the record, this has absolutely nothing to do with 50. This has to do with the fact that this song is bad.

Sometimes it really is that simple. Didn't mind the hook, but Rule's verses were painfully bad.

This is a terrible track, plain and simple. I cant believe that this is the same person who made so many dope tracks in the early 00's.

Was just thinking the other day about how Ja was killin it back in the early 00's! Every song he put out was a hit! He really set the standard on what it was to have consistent mainstream hits...

Not as bad as everyone says it is, but its still not too exciting....totally agree with cb126405 about that 'Free' track, that was a certified hit! Murder Inc messed up bad..

One of my first CD's I ever bought was Ja Rule's 'The Last Temptation' Used to love listenin' to hiz music... this though, is just crap, his voice doesn't sit the beat or Ross' voice AT ALL.

I mean come on Ja. I was really hoping this was the song that brought Ja back into the game, but it just isn’t. He doesn’t even sound like the old rule.

I got no problem with both hook and beat, but Ja Rule with poorly constructed tepid rhymes got absolutely upstaged, and that lessens the effectiveness of the joint.

I like the production, and the hook wasn't bad, but Ja Rule did not sound very good on here. Nowhere near the hits he used to make. Hopefully he comes out with some stronger singles than this.

i have no problem at all with this one, i mean its definitely nothing compared to his early hits but i like it a lot! the beat is extremely catchy, k-ross' vocals on the hook are smooth and ja's flow was good.

I was expecting the worst when i saw this on the chacrts, come on ya'll, it ain't no ja '03 but its decent, i'd let rock if i was tunin the radio to a different station in my car. I think this track is better than whatever Lil Wayne or Game got out right now.
