J. Cole - Lights Please
Artist: J. Cole
Producer: J. Cole
Album: Untitled (TBD)
Label: Roc Nation/Columbia
We’ve all been there. You’ve got a girlfriend or boyfriend who’s dumber than a can of paint, but the sex is so good you just can’t seem to let ‘em go. Well J Cole can relate. Having apparently recovered from his Heartache, the North Carolina native is back with his previously leaked, now officially mastered debut single Lights Please. While a bass-thumping beat from producer The Jam bumps in the background, J Cole shows that he’s just as comfortable spitting sexual obscenities as he is dropping clever wordplay (his “She gave a ni**a mad brain, something like The Wiz” line had me laughing out loud). Fans will have to wait a while to find out if that kind of versatility behind the mic will translate into sales. J Cole’s as-yet untitled debut album is currently slated to drop next summer as part of Hova’s new Roc Nation movement.

No wonder Jay heard this record and called his lawyers, haha. Cole has skills. Nice bridge here between the old and new schools. I am anxious to hear what he has in store for us over the next 9 months.
And no... we are NOT "late" on featuring this record. His label just recently decided to use it a single. |

I can't believe I haven't heard this song yet, where have I been hiding? This track is a PROBLEM! Everything about this works, the addictive production paves the way for J Cole to lay down hot lyrics and a hot flow.
You can just tell this dude will stick around for a while. He is not a come and go rapper. I am very tempted to bump this a classic because of that reason, but the chorus held me back to give this just a 4. |

I see why Hov was so impressed, he dropped some nice metaphors in the song and though he's rapping about pu**y it was pretty deep. Looking foward to the album.

Wow, this is almost perfect. No joke. I mean, nice metaphors, nice feel, nice flow, and a good topic. Classic. Can't believe I hadn't heard this yet.

It's about time for the DJBOOTH to have some J. Cole. He's one of the dopest new cats in the game. "The Warm Up" a real ill mixtape. If you haven't listened to it, I suggest you do. This certainly is a classic.
People were saying that they don't see this being a successful single. It sort of made me scratch my head because so many people talk about changing the sound of the radio, but then when an artist goes with a left-field single, they be like "Oh, that doesn't sound like what's on the radio right now". Um...EXACTLY. Isn't that what you want?! You want him to make a cliche radio single just because this one might not be like that? How do people expect the mainstream sound to change if they don’t embrace people taking risks like J. Cole putting out “Lights Please”? I actually think it will do great. One thing that IS like a lot of radio singles is that it’s on the topic of females. Don’t hate. Support this brother. Good Music! |

J. Cole definitely does justice to "A star is born". When I heard his dope verse on that song, I went searching and found out I slept on him twice when djbooth featured him: Heartache & Grown Simba! CHECK THOSE OUT, and his mixtape which sounds better than half the albums this year. Those 2 songs deserve more reviews and ratings! ;)
As for this song, what I like the most is how J. Cole successfully kept the same structure for the whole song (lyrics). The metaphors, storytelling, metrics and flow (the melodic touch works very well) are so on point! Production is fresh: so SIMPLE!!! like CB said, it's catchy but stays in the background letting Cole shine. |

Lyrics:
I had this lil’ bad thing, somethin’ like them 10’s She gave a aggin mad brain, somethin’ like the Wiz But you see the sad thing fuckin’ with her is Is the chick ain’t even have brains, dummy like a @*#$! So I tried to show her About the world and about just who we really are And where we’ve come and how we still have to go really far Like baby look at how we live broke on the boulevard But all she ever want me to do is unhook her bra Then all I really want is for her to go down low Before you know it, she wet enough to get drowned slow And all that deep shit I was previously down fo’ Replaced by freak shit I am currently down fo’ You see I peeped that @*#$! is power That proud feeling we get knowing that @*#$! is ours And how it feels to feel that feeling you feelin’ when you be drillin’ that shit Got her sayin’ you be killin’ that shit And all the pain the world caused, she be healin’ that shit And nah that ain’t your girl dog, but you be feelin’ that shit And you just wanna tell her everything she might need But in the meantime, it’s lights please Chorus: Lights please, lights please Turn off the lights For now everything just seems so right And how you make the darkness seem so bright Feelin’ like things gon be alright (Repeat) So now we in the hotel, mirrors on the ceiling She say she wanna blow L’s, I hear her and I’m willin’ But everytime I smoke, well a aggin mind gone So that every word I spoke, well I’m tryin to put her on But she couldn’t hear me I told her all about how we been livin’ a lie And that they love to see us all go to prison or die Like baby look at how they show us on the TV screen But all she ever want me to do is unzip her jeans Then all I really want is for her to get on top Before you know it, she workin’, jerkin’ it non-stop And all that next shit I was previously talkin’ Is now that wet shit that I’m currently lost in And while that sweat drips, I am reminded All the times my brother told me that @*#$! is blindin’ I’m findin’ The more I grow, the more y’all seem to stay the same Don’t even know the rules but yet y’all tryin’ to play the game And ain’t it shameful how aggins blame hoes for givin’ birth To a baby that took two to make Coward aggin, you a fake How you gon look in your son’s face and turn your back? Then go start another family dog, what type of shit is that? She said ‘It’s okay,’ rubbed my head and told me to relax Laid a aggin down proper like she was recording tracks Said “I know you wanna change the world, but for the night please Just reach over and hit the lights please |

@Mike Dreams - As always you are right brother!
This is just my type of joint! Who says a Radio-Single or any other joint about cliche topics have to suck lyrically ??? We as audience gotta keep standards high, and demand substance/lyricism in more marketable tracks as well. Co-fcuking-sign! |

I feel like the chorus should be given to a Jamaican, don't ask me why I just feel like it bring this a step closer to classic status. I also feel like I'd like to hear a few verses from Kardinal Offishall -- now I know I'm crazy.

Ok, I had to take a second listen on this one, because FredRico posted the lyrics and the story line impressed me. It’s difficult at times getting pass the excessive rawness of certain traks. I have nothing against any forms of expression however; we will lose listeners when the message becomes too harsh.
But, on the second time thru, I thought the trak was hot! I’ll have to listen to more of J Cole’s work because it is obvious that he is both lyrically talented and has level of intellect as well. Plus... that beat is sick and the story line is one that a lot a folks can relate too (smile). And I can’t say that I’ve heard a lot a songs that addressed this topic as successfully as J Cole so... Imma have to say this one is a banger!! |
