As anyone who plays the guitar, or even plays Guitar Hero, already knows, Lynard Skynard’s Simple Man is simply one of the better rock songs ever written. While the original’s roots lay in Southern rock, its spirit is universal – even New England rappers like J The S were obviously inspired by the track’s timeless message. Producer Franco Anthony does the heavy lifting in transforming Simple Man from rock to rock-rap, playing drums and bringing in Alex Bodnar to play the track’s scorching bass and guitar sections. It’s the perfect setting for J The S to bring in yet more of his realer than real raps, vowing to set aside life’s endless distractions to simply concentrate on what truly matters. While Pill’s tastes are more hedonistic, his hedonism is also of the simple kind: all he’s asking for are some “cash to clutch and a bad b**tch to back it up.” Keeping in the spirit of the track, I’ll close by making things as simple as possible. J The S’ upcoming album, Last Days, drops via The DJBooth next Wednesday, January 18. You should download it. It doesn’t get any more simple than that.

Hip hop with a country vibe and a bluesy/rock chorus... that works. Jake makes music with a message, so if you can appreciate his artistry then there is lots to like. Being real in hip hop is such bullsh*t, but not here.

the original was a great song, written by a great song writer who died. this however does that song no justice.
DJbooth better watch for putting this sample up, you can get in trouble for that. you think the people that own the publishing for this song, want people like this dude rapping bullsh*t over it? shit is wack. DJ Booth gonna fall off keep promoting the wack shit. |

Very fresh approach to the music, J The S did his thing. Good to hear a feature form a bigger artist that is relevant to the theme of the song. Overall great song.

I'm not feeling this at all. The beat is all rock and doesn't really fit J the S flow in my opinion. Chorus was wack and everything else just felt out of place.

This is some of J The S better work, thought he flipped the Skynard song well actually. Looking forward to the album.

First off, @Michael Bently. go suck a DICK and post your hate elsewhere, obviously you didn't listen to the message in the song, and pretty much all hip-hop is sampled from some song, so if you think J the S didn't do LS justice, so what, that's your view, no need to go on a mindless hate rage while you've got sand in your vagina.
As for the track, I actually prefer J the S on more upbeat records, didn't overally enjoy it but I felt J the S poured himself onto this (I dunno, I felt it) and I always enjoy a bit of Pill, he'll get to where he wants to be one day (I hope) but in total, the chorus and verses just aren't in my field of hip-hop enjoyment but I can see how this would be on heavy repeat for people, it just has to be in your territory. |

Wow. 4 star song, but i'm givin him an extra star just for originality, creativity, and the boldness to step out and do a hip-hop song with country/rock production. Great message, great song.
