Calm down, calm down – Booth favorite (and recent “In the Mix” interview subject) J The S hasn’t switched up his game to appeal to the Tea Party crowd. On the contrary, Patriot finds the Boston representative in typically defiant, paranoid and lyrically fresh form. Flowing over Blaze P‘s piano-led instrumental, the rapper says what so many of us have been thinking about the current situation in D.C. (“Republicans are devils, Democrats got no balls”) and offers some words of wisdom well worth heeding: “Don’t cooperate with authority, be your own man, don’t follow the majority.” Singer P-Dub jumps on board to contribute some layered harmonies on the chorus, adding a poppier vibe to balance out the headliner’s revolutionary rhetoric. Though recorded during the sessions for hotly-anticipated full-length The Last Days (coming soon), Patriot ultimately made neither the album nor Jake’s recent, Booth-sponsored Wish You Were Here mixtape (available here for streaming and free download). Should it have made the cut? I’ll leave it to you to decide.

First of all, bravo to Jake for not withholding his opinion about political matters (or merely matters that matter to him). Too many artists choose to ignore the opportunity that they have to speak up for what they believe in.
As for the song, I am not sure that political rubmlings have been this catchy and entertaining (minus the slightly auto-tuned section) since, I dunno... its been that long. This was good enough to have found a home on some project, but its being unreleased is a benefit to us all. |

At first listen, I could have sworn Akon was on the chorus and that's a compliment.
I'm glad to see there's still some political rap music out there; it's refreshing; even more interesting is how bipartisan the track is. It's not every day you hear a rap artist create a track that's not cleaning off Obama's shaft. ("My President is Black" anyone?) Great track. |

Hell yea clicked on all cylinders for me. Chorus, production & verses were all on point. @Phantastic: Agreed, definitely thought it sounded like Akon 1st listen.

idk what it is about these futuristic messy beats that i love but damn i love em.
instantly gotta say im lovin the top "i pledge aliegence to the flag......" (you know what it do (bless our troops you know what it is) now back to this song which hes already got me interested before i even hear the first lines. politics SAY WHAT, ohh naw he didnt, uhh yes he did. you know the caliber of an artist when they choose to pick tough subjec and j did just that. why do i give this a classic? because its not really the production which is well done but rather the message and how it actual hits home. this song is about seeing whats real and holding to your beliefs, so far, this is up their on my list of quickly become immense fav tracks. 5-spins cause im judging this personally! |

Man I told J I was disappointed this wasn't on the project.
All around this track is very impressive, and J showed us a different side of him. Very enjoyable. |

The only thing I didn't like about this was the auto-tune, it would have been better off without it. It's not exactly a, more like a 3.5.

“Republicans are devils, Democrats got no balls”
Dude doesnt play eh. Going in on Electorate system and the US goverenment. he really does dicsuss the state of the nation here. he does make some good points but he does go about in a naive way cause well J the S the world isnt fair and the rich do get richer and the poor are forgotten. But i dont get the message that politics is flawed and that the governement thinks about noone bu themselves. he delivers his message in a brash manner which goes well with Blaze P's instrumentals. ill give it a 4 cause i listened to his point wish to hear more |

As everybody is wondering...I am too..who is on the hook?! I'm not really digging the hook I must say but it still would be nice to know who it is. I love when rappers talk about the economy or politics because it really brings out the truth of what goes in out everyday life...That's why Ultimate Victory by Chamillionare was one of my favorite albums of all time. J The S knows exactly what hes talking about and the production by Blaze P. really makes this an enjoyable track minus the hook.

Right off the bat I am loving the production and then I thought, as many have already said, that I was listening to Akon on the hook. And for a chorus that's a great compliment.
Lyrics are strong and the P-Dub assisted chorus does a great job of keeping my ear hooked to the song. I am just really impressed with the whole track and some of the political jabs he takes in the song are spot on, and I hate political BS so I can relate. I could do with out the little auto-tuned part there in the middle but it keeps the listener on their toes I guess. Doesn't really take away from the song but by no means was it necessary for this song. Seriously, did they layer P-Dub's and Akon's voice together? |

Im feelin the statement and the hook sounds like Akon just a little but I still think its necessary lit for the mind and the production was fresh too.

I understand J wanting to send a message like this, but it all sounds so derivative, like the kind of stuff that's meant to brainwash impressionable high school students into "raging against the machine..."
I'm PO'd at some of the politics of the last decade, but but he needs to concentrate his anger a bit more, since his disses are all over the place (Whites stole black music? Interesting idea, but what does that have to do with the theme of Patriotism?) Also, I find it strange that we get a list of things to do and not to do near then end of the track. It's not that his beliefs aren't respectable...it's just that the list format in a song called Patriot just doesn't fit. This track sounds alright, and I dig the Akon-esque hook. The production is nice and layered, with some piano and synth forming the basis. I'd say that there is a bit too much emphasis on the two tone synth pulses (the ones that start at the very beginning). It's pretty catchy but also somewhat serious, so the beat fits the tone of the lyrics. Minus three for the content and slightly annoying beat. Skip it folks. (**PS: What's your favorite political rap or hip-hop song? Not many can match the passion of N.W.A., but there have to be some better examples out there. Also, PLEASE don't say "Fight the Power") |

Very political song and that's why I like it. People don't sing about patriotism like this dude, and it's good that they don't cause they probably can't do it like this dude. Has a good truth to it. Like how he's white and he says "whites stole black music"-true though.

Jake does what is missing from hip-hop. The last person to make this much of an impression on a political standpoint was Eminem on Mosh. Thats some pretty elite company.
The beat is fresh and enjoyable. His message is powerful to say the least. P-Dub sounds great on the hook. The resilient tone of this song give me a bulletproof feeling. I love it. |
