Fayettenam-raised New York City transplant J. Cole has come to save the day and put North Carolina back on the map. Yes, Petey Pablo had his run, but what have we heard from the Tar Heel State since? Every time I listen to J. Cole, I always think about Verizon commercials because it seems like the whole industry is behind him. Today we bring you We On, which was originally recorded for placement on DJ Khaled’s Victory album but somehow didn’t make the cut (and won’t land on Cole’s own studio debut). On the lyrical side Cole comes in tough as usual, flowing over his own rock and roll-influenced production. When we asked him about the record, he wasn’t even aware that it had leaked to these internets. Regardless, we’re glad it has arrived, because this is going directly to my iPod’s April playlist. Will it make it onto yours? Let’s see what the DJ Booth has to say.

Yes, this should have made Khaled's project (its better than 95% of the records that made the final cut). Yes, J. Cole is worthy of the hype that has been heaped upon his shoulder. And no, this isn't an incomplete version of the song - we cut off the last minute of just instrumental.

Haha this is too good to be on Khaled's album. It would make everything look even worse than it already is! J.Cole is dope but i still havn't heard a song by him that makes me say he's gonna blow up. This production is sick though and i would have been happy with another minute of instrumental. 3.5 stars

This is a really good song by Cole. However the only flaw in it is there needs to be a third verse on the instrumental that was cut off. His flow is good and the lyrics are fire.

Wow. I'm extremly dissapointed that this didn't make the cut for Khaled's album. It is in fact better than many songs. Now I wonder if there are more songs like this that didn't make the album. But on the record, it's just all in all good even if the hook is just a little dull.

Cole comes strong but the production is a tad to repetitive for my taste. Why this was left off Khaled's project...the world may never know.

One of the few rappers that's worth the hype. Other than the boring hook, the song is dope and J always comes with some nice lines. I couldn't of pictured this on Khaled's album, yeah it would of been one of the best songs, if not the best, but it's more artistic than the dumb-down, hood songs that made the album. Still can't wait for the album to drop.

Khaled, what the hell were you thinking. Were you upset that there wasn't enough spots in the song for you to yell random shit?
This definitely would have been a standout track on Victory and would have been a good look for J. Cole too. I love the electric guitar and the piano in the background and Cole does a great job of handling it. The first verse in the song has some really classic one liners. Cole goes hard the entire record which makes it even more of a shame it didn't make the final cut. |

I am glad this didn't make Khaled's album. J. Cole has already surpassed the ranks of Khaled and his whole "We the best" thing he has going on. Altough, I think this would be a phenomenal track to put on a debut maybe use this as an intro to lead into an entire CD of Cole at his finest.

Cole can spit that's for sure, but the production threw me off. The electric guitar is cool, but the hook could really use some work. Not to say that saying "We On" over and over again isn't creative, it could just use some work is all I'm saying.
Been a fan of Cole for a while now and I'm really glad to see that he will be finally getting the recognition he deserves. |

@Mossessss and Hoamboy, you're 100% right about that hook. A simple back up voice would have worked wonders on that snoozefest. I liked the production for the verses though, although J toned it down way too much for that hook. The guitars and piano provide a simple but effective beat, along with that simple electric bass line, and the lines are delivered pretty well, but it's just not worth sitting through that again. 2 stars for the production.

Its below par for a track from J.Cole (when you compare it to The Warm Up Mixtape), though its a dope song for any DJ Khaled project. Who knows why Khaled left this off Victory.
Production is solid & J.Cole is definately worthy of all the internet hype (as some have said here). The hook was probably the only problem I had with this song. 3.5 |

Def a strong track, strong verses and loving the live feel, I like how cole joints be havin that feel, that yo you get the drums, you get the guitar and i'll get the mic and we go in feel, this is nothin like the crowd Khaled brings thats prob why he didn't put it on the joint but shouts to cole North Cak we coming

This is a tad bit below par for Cole, but considering we havent heard a ton of new material from him in a while, ill take what I can get. This would have been better than anything on Khaleds tape, but thats not saying a whole lot. I think he would have gotten mad props for putting Cole on his project, but instead ill just shake my head..

I like that he's taking advantage of a more rock type production- that has definite potential in the industry. The track definetely had a few lines worth quoting. I'll be adding to my pod for sure.

Love J. Cole. I'm from NC myself, Greensboro to be exact and I know I can speak for the rest of NC when I say that its awesome to have an NC representative that puts out REAL G.O.O.D. music. Keep it up J. Cole, we know you will.

I wish he hadn't gone with the hook at all, since that was the weakest element of what is otherwise a dope song with handful of memorable lines and the guitar and the organs having their way with the drums.

When this started off with the electric guitar I thought this was going to be a classic. Not quite, it falls into the banger category. I thought the simple hook was effective. It kinda pauses the song and then guns it again, it works.
Im sorry but there is no way this would of worked on a Khaled cd. Surely you all realize that its nothing like any other DJ Khaled song. |

To be on Khaled's album it had to have at least 2, 3, or 4 guest features...so maybe thats why it wasn't on Victory...just a guess though. But the rock influenced production by J is amazing and works really well with his flow. His lyrics are rugged and I'm loving this track the more I replay it.

Lèse-majesté to cut this song. Don't see the problem in not including it into Victory. I'm even glad cuz this is way too real and good for Khaled to impair. Although disappointing it won't make it on his debut.

This is honestly one of J. Cole's worst tracks. He still spits some serious wordplay though. I agree with Aussie_Pride
Perhaps I'm biased coming from Raleigh, NC, but I think J. Cole can f*ck with anybody lyrically, even the greats like Nas, Kweli, and Lupe. His delivery is more than on point. I've barely taken "The Warm Up" off repeat in the past month, and most of those breaks were for the "Jermaine Is Here" mixtape. J. Cole is the future of hip-hop and everyone will revise their Top 10 when his album drops. |

J Cole is my newest favorite artist next to K. Sparks. I give mad props for Jay picking him up and putting him on RocNation. I have both mixtapes by him and they are great, definitely on repeat on my stereo. I also love his production on the song. He's going to continue to climb high and far. Keep it up Cole, you're great.
After seeing Little Brother and J Cole come outta NC, I'm beginning to get jealous that I was born in San Diego. |
