In a world where seemingly everything is “highly anticipated,” we can truly say that J. Cole’s collaboration with his Roc Nation boss Jay-Z is highly anticipated. Ever since the NC rap protégé signed with the almighty Hova we knew this day would come, and when it did we expected it to feel less like a single and more like a passing of the torch. Well DJBooth Nation, now that Mr. Nice Watch is here, is it everything you hoped for? Like most of his material, Nice Watch is a self-produced affair, alternating between a high octane synth line and a more organic, piano laced chorus (shades of Kanye’s work on WTT?). On the mic Cole, if you couldn’t guess by the title, is at his most swagger fueled, vowing that his Mr. Nice Guy persona’s been replaced by, you guessed it, a more success hungry Mr. Nice Watch – a persona that Beyonce’s baby daddy is sure to remind us he’s already cultivated in his guest verse. The (actually) highly anticipated album Cole World: The Sideline Story drops on September 27. Until then, I’m going to kick back and enjoy the inevitable brewing in the comments below, starting in 5, 4, 3………

J. Cole seems to be already stepping up the plate and getting us hyped for September 27th, my guess is that he still wants us to wait, only giving us the clean version for now, but if this is any indication, Cole World should be like something we've never heard before. Probably not the highlight track of the album so far, but still great material.

"Don't mind me boy I'm red hot / they're not / I'm over here, I'm over there, I'm everywhere they not"
These lyrics, the flow and the mess of a beat hurt my soul. |

A bit disappointing considering it's Jay-Z and J. Cole. There's an obvious dubstep influence in the production, might have to give this a few more listens to see if it grows on me. Have a feeling this will be one of the weaker songs on the album. In rotation for now.

I was feelin' it; the dub step-style mixed with the musician-side of Cole definitely shows with the guitar breaks. It was something different, which is good, because hearing artists go in on generic beats is getting old. I think I was too hyped for this... either way, still a great track that makes me even more excited for Cole World: The Sideline Story.

J. Cole is my favourite rapper that has not has real mainstream success and prefer him that way now that I see waht he produces for the mainstream. For some reason I cant seem to digest Cole as this swaggered out braggadocious n*gga. "Cost Me Alot" on SNL has the same concept but is way better than this.
However, this is still a good track and again I think I had way to high expectations. So 3 stars when compared to everything on SNL. |

What the @*#$! is this. I guess the chorus is the high point but honestly, saying this as a huge cole fan. This isn't close to anything i expected from his debut, this is pretty bad production especially. Maybe if the production had kept the same crossoverish feel it had during the chorus and the last bit of the jay-z verse then the it would be better but it didnt so eh.

When I first heard this song it wasn't what I was expecting. But after listening to it a few times, I got hooked on the song. This is more mainstream j cole, which he HAS to make to get more fans and add to his fan base to help the album sell more. Plus the label forces him to make more mainstream songs to sell more as well. But by having mainstream songs out before the album, he will appeal to the "mainstream" audience and once he brings them in, he can introduce them to REAL music, the Cole that we are use to, and can ultimately change what mainstream thinks is good music. Trust me J Cole knows what he's doing. #Coleworld

He missed the mark, the biggest issue being that the production is awkward. Hopefully Cole figures the right way to incorporate Dub Hop into his tracks if he chooses to pursue the combination again.

I am thoroughly enjoying watching as the boundaries of the hip-hop genre have slowly dissipated and allowed for new production techniques and the acceptance of dubstep and techno beats. Keeping it fresh these days is staying on top of what's new, and using it in creative ways. Hearing big guns like Cole and Jay-Z flowing over this kind of stuff is great.

Of the new songs, this is probably my least favorite J.Cole song, although any of my "least favorite" songs from Jermaine probably beat many new hip-hop tracks.
An odd commercial attempt that doesn't entirely fail, but my liking towards this joint is probably credited to the heavy beat and a strong Jay-Z verse which is better than Cole deserves because the verses from Jermaine aren't up to the "banger" level that Jay-Z or instrumental establishes. Musically, the dub-influenced production is tight and fresh enough, no qualms there. Where the song lacks is that it offers a cliched subject matter without the accuracy of a great piece of songwriting to back dope production. Cole does place a few good lines here and there but more often than not suffers from shooting for the least common denominator! Overall, don't expect what the album previews' implied the song is going to be, a sequel to "It Cost Me A Lot". It's not all that meaningful, nor is it a very well-written song. I spent a lot of time criticizing this one, but overall I am still giving the song a 3, because J. Cole has gotten to do something a bit different & creative (for him) and Jay-Z has managed to do something similar (for him) without ever boring us. "Mr. Nice Watch" is not a bad song at all, it's just that, with a Jay-Z feature and that instrumental in his hands I think we all deserved better. |

The collaboration with Jay Z was highly anticipated and Cole should have produced a song with more depth than Mr. Nice Watch. Cole also isn't at his best lyrically although there is undoubtedly a swagger to his flow that I like. But the main point is, this song didn't sound like Jay passing the torch to Cole - which is what it should have been.
