No matter how much praise J. Cole receives from his peers, how many verses he bodies on a weekly basis (ex. Looking for Trouble), or how having Hova and Roc Nation in his corner could go to his head, he still rhymes like the hungriest of MCs. I’ve yet to hear a verse that made me think “wow, he really slacked off there.” The first leak off of his upcoming and highly anticipated Friday Night Lights mixtape is no exception. On the self-produced Before I’m Gone, Cole lays down a simultaneously beautiful and hard beat and then walks us through his coming of age in Fayetteville, NC, while also addressing the misconceptions of him as the hometown rep, spittin’ “Them old n*ggas sayin’ ‘Cole the wrong one bringing the city shine/all he ever doing is paintin’ pictures of crime/tellin stories of pain, paintin’ pictures of dope’/ B*tch, if you listenin’, I’m paintin’ pictures of hope.Friday Night Lights will be available, of course, this Friday, Nov. 12, and if Gone is any indication, it’ll definitely be a Cole World when his debut album (hopefully) drops early next year.

This song first appeared on the Top Hip Hop / R&B Chart on November 15, 2010

Cole finds himself in the position he is in because of his monsterous mixtape releases, so the world indeed should be excited about Friday's release. And yes, I'd except the entire project to sound just as good as this record. Cole is on top of his game and soon to be on top of THE game.

J. Cole just gets better and better. While haven't been a huge fan of all of his past stuff this is definitely on that next level for him.

I'm waiting for the moment when he lets me down. I know it's odd to say but when you've got a rookie who hasn't disappointed you yet - you begin looking for flaws.

I've been waiting since The Come Up. Cole has the midas touch right now when it comes to up and comers who can both produce and rap.

Every time I think he's on top of everything, he gets higher. He always proves something new.

Now he is producing as well, this is a solid track. Hip Hop needs J. Cole, the last of the dying breed.

I admit, I slept on J. Cole for a long ass time, but thats all changed now. Like Jessica said....dude is hungry. Lyrically, he's probably the best up and comer right now. By this time next year he might be bigger than Drake. This song is proof enough.
