If you were to ask me at this very moment, “Richard, what is your place in the universe?”, I’d probably tell you something like “Sitting at a desk, in front of a computer, in Minneapolis, Minnesota, America, Earth…” But that’s because I’m a smartass – The ILLZ, on the other hand, is a deep thinker, and on new mixtape leak To Know Your Place in the Universe the Jersey native uses that very same question as the springboard for some more profound ruminations on life, the universe and everything. Over a moody string backdrop sampled from DJ Coldcut and Krush‘s The Sign and The Sign (Remix) (which themselves featured vocal snippets from Earth, Wind & Fire’s Energy), the freestyle series alumnus surveys the road that lies ahead, and affirms his commitment to pursuing musical greatness: “I’m standin’ by my guns like Charlton Heston, and maybe this once I feel destined…” Like what you’re hearing? Joe Budden might be more well known for making "mood music," but for my money The ILLZ is the best at it right now. The way his breathy delivery and emotions are tied into the instrumental is really pretty incredible. You can tell he gives a sh*t.

I don't know if there's anyone better at creating a mood, an atmosphere, than ILLZ right now (remember the all caps when you spell the man's name). And it's more than "just" trippy, the dude can really rhyme too. Props.

I remember the first time i saw The ILLZ, i was blown away by his presense, mood setting, and flow on the mic. He is such a creatize dude. As for this song.... Im really feeling this from him. There isnt much verses in it, but it doesnt matter, he still caught me in and made me a long term fan of this song. The production in this really really great from Coldcut & DJ Krush. This is a banger, for sure.
