Illa J has some tremendous shoes to fill. Detroit rapper John Yancey is the younger brother of the deceased James Yancey, a.k.a. legendary producer J Dilla. Instead of retreating from music following his brother’s 2006 passing, Illa J chose to devote his life towards upholding the family legacy. While the jury is still out on whether the younger sibling possesses his brother’s gift, his new single, We Here, should solidify his standing as a gifted, if somewhat raw, emcee. Illa J spits a few verses about living in the moment, mixing in some soft tenor croons here and there. The beat is part of an unreleased catalog of Dilla’s work that Delicious Vinyl has been holding on to. We Here will appear on Illa J’s forthcoming debut album, Yancey Boys, which supposedly contains more of the aforementioned catalog.
I often agree with justokhall lol! Yeah the beat is the best part of the song...he isn't bad but the result is rather boring! the verses are ok, the hook is weak. OK
J. Dilla is both one of the best producers and most slept-on producers of all-time. Sadly, his work won't be glorified as it could have been if he were to have been able to rise to fame while alive. This beat is no exception, except his brother Illa doesn't do it justice (like a plethora of other emcees would have). With that said, it's a nice listen as constituted.
RIP Dilla !..this chorus sounds like somethin u hear on a car commercial, elevator, mall etc etc; he should come with more next time, the sonq not bad thouqh .
