Ice Cube - I Rep That West
Artist: Ice Cube
Producer: Jigg
Album: I Am the West
Label: Lench Mob Records
You don’t see country singers arguing about who truly represents rural Oklahoma, but in hip-hop authenticity and geography are paramount. No one knows that better than legendary gangsta rap inventor turned family friendly movie star Ice Cube, whose now finds himself in a low simmering beef with the so-called New West movement about who truly can claim that, I Rep That West. While an appropriately slapping beat from producer Jigg bangs in the background, Cube vocals low rides the track, assuring newcomers that while he may also rep Are We There Yet, he’s still Cali for life. Since I also call the west coast home I feel justified in at least saying that this hook does not do the golden state proud, but otherwise, I feel like we’ve got a banger on our hands. Who disagrees? For more left coast hip-hop keep it locked for the release of Cube’s upcoming album I Am the West (notice a theme?) set to drop July 13.

There are certain emcees in the game that I hope never ever retire. Cube is among this group. It's not that I don't like his foray into acting or entrepreneurship, but hip hop needs its talented foundation members to remain recording artists as long as they can breathe into a mic (minus Flava Flav, who can go away).
"I Rep That West" isn't classic Cube, but its good Cube. The hook is solid (its obviously appealing more to a mainstream audience than a die-hard Cube audience), the rhymes are full of high-octane energy, and after months and months of no new Cube its a welcomed addition to his catalog. |

This is definitely "too West Coast", but it is still good. Cube still has it in him after all these years. The hook is definitely catchy.

The real highlight here is the production with Cube's verses; the hook could use a bit of work. (Actually, this is one of those tracks that would have done fine without a hook at all)
I'm anticipating Cube's album. |

Haven't heard from him in a while, but if this is the end result of a long break, then by all means was the wait worth it. "I Rep That West" major strong points were all three of Cube's verses and the sick production offered up by Jigg. Hook was pretty cool, but it isn't something that will illicit alot of replay value on my iPod.

I'm not sure why but this is the song I want every other Ice Cube song that comes out to sound like. Maybe I'm just a little over-excited for another cube album.
Anoyone else notice that small Lil Wayne reference? Would that be considered a diss. |

Wow! It's good to see Ice Cube coming out of the woodworks for this new album.
The production is simple and clean, with a smooth bass line and some piano combining with the "clapping" sound to make a pretty sick beat. The hook is pretty good, but like Z said, it's catering to a mainstream audience...which means that's it's not as intense or in-depth as some of his previous work. But I know everyone's here to hear Cube, and he does not disappoint. It's the Cube you know and love. So check it out. As a side note, Oklahoma is West? Really? That's dubious. |

First thing that stood out to me is that the production has a true west coast feel to it. Not to many songs out there today that have a west coast vibe to them, even if it is Game or even Snoop on it.
Always nice to see Cube get back on the mic and lay down some work. I mean he is prolly making millions with movies but he was meant to spit. Song is solid but not a classic by any means. If anything it just shows that he can still lay down a verse. I mean I have seen movies and they aren't tough at all. But hearing him rap reminds me that this is a scary man. Solid. |

Wow! After hearing this I am really excited for Cube's new album. His last album was good and all, but this track is already better than anything on "Raw Footage". That beat is crazy and so is the hook. Cube also brings it on this, although I have heard better from him.

Cube still got it after making all those corny lil kid movies. In my opinion he hasn't lost one gram of his lyrical talents. Cube gotta come back and school these foolish youngin's on what it is in the game today. Cube, stop making those corny movies and get west coast on these b!tch "rappers"

I've always loved Ice Cube's gangster and tough look...but the hook here kinda goes away from that a little bit even if his verses still bring it hard. The prodution isn't overly exciting either.
Cube is still and always will be one of the best in the west...so he better keep "repping that west". This a nice west coast hip hip track and even though its not spectacular Cube shows that he still has it. |

In all honesty, I wasn't particularly impressed by Cube's flow here. It kind of feels like he's just going through the motions to me. Just like in sports, it's not getting to the top that's hard, it's staying there. Once you're on top it's hard to stay as hungry and driven, and while this is definitely a solid effort from Cube, and one I'll take any day, it's not blowing anyone away. Is there one line in the whole track that's really quotable?
(p.s. I live in L.A., so don't give me any "stop hating on the west" bs. I've got nothing but love for the west, this track's just not that dope.) |

The production is good quality, as it should be at this point of Ice Cube’s career, who sounds as good as ever. The flow is crisp and as technical as can be. The vocals and writing of hook are fitting and perfectly matched to the music. A fine comeback buzz-single.

A definite West Coast vibe to it, I didn't really like the repetitive chorus but otherwise the rest was decent Ice Cube. I know he can go harder.

Cube has done himeself justice with this track. This track ai'nt a classic but it is without a doubt a good Ice cube track. The hook and chorus is wicked, the verses are full with rhymes packed with kick-start energy.
It's wonderful to see Ice Cube back in the rap game. Missed Him. He is such a LEGEND. |

Not really feeling Ice Cube since he's been making those movies and sitcom that's to be out. It doesn't make him seem hard any more. It's a good Cube song, but I'm not feeling him anymore. I still think Cube is talented but just not for me anymore.

The Hook is catchy and the verses are unique but I didn't like it when he dissed Lil Wayne. I think I liked the beat and hook better than the verses tho...
