Ice Cube - Drink the Kool-Aid
Artist: Ice Cube
Producer: Brandon Alexander
Album: I Am the West
Label: Lench Mob Records
With the West Coast slightly quiet as of late, hip-hop vet Ice Cube has brought a single to rep the leftest state, and rep it hard he does! You may think after a string of kid movies and sitcoms that Ice Cube has lost his hood pass and traded it in for a SAG card, but those doubting the man will be surprised by his new single, the banging Drink the Kool-Aid. Produced by Brandon Alexander, everything about this song is West Coast, with a heavy drum beat to match Cube’s heavy vocals and a guitar melody that will make you reminisce about Ice Cube’s NWA days, this song definitely represents the West in an old school kind of way. Though lyrically Cube may have went over board with lines like “I kill more stars than Conrad Murray,” you cannot knock the aggression coming from Cube as he plans to show the young guns who he beefs with that he has never lost his original gangster flow. With his album I Am the West dropping September 28th, can Cube help put California back on the map?

I'm not usually an Ice Cube fan, but this track goes hard. Love the beat. The hook is pretty annoying, and lyrically, his rapid-fire references get just as annoying pretty quickly. The aggression in his flow really sells the whole thing.

Good to see Cube back on that OG shit again. This track was solid, but it could've used another verse to push it to true banger status. Tight production + strong delivery + decent lyrics = 3.5 *'s

Btw, that's the third Waterboy reference I've heard in rap in the last couple months. Movie's 12-years-old.

This track comes hard, and Cube's approach is definitely intense. This is not the single track to thrust the West back into center stage of the rap game, but it is a good, solid track.

I'm really loving Ice Cube's songs off this album so far. Obviously he isn't as lyrically strong as he was twenty years ago, but I wouldn't expect him to be. What is really getting me about the singles released so far is the production. So far it sounds like it actually belongs on 2pacs shore. Not since The Games "The Doctors Advocate" have I heard West Coast production sound so good.

Putting aside my feelings about the inter-west coast beef going down right now, this is a hard track from one of the hardest emcees in hip-hop history.
That "penetentiar-ary/diction-ary" section was off to me, but otherwise this is that headbanger ish. Props to Cube, the man can still crush a mic. |

I love the funkass beat and Ice Cube came correct. I agree it's not a classic but it's definitely a banger!
The hook could have been a little better but it's still all to the good. |

Perhaps Cube should just get old and fat gracefully? This is just bad.

I really respect Ice Cube as a rapper, but I mean really? I've listened to his every album, and he just keeps on disappointing me lately. I get this feeling that he is alway rapping about same things, but just on different beats. It is in a rotation for now.

not bad, I appreciate Cube doesn't change with the game. The last thing we need is another singing rapper.

I don't think this is a radio single like I Rep That West but a good album track. Though nice beat and pretty good rhymes.

Ice cube has got to find the correct balance between an evolving hip hop scene and his legendary backwork material.
