Hoodie Allen - Party at the Beach House
Artist: Hoodie Allen
Producer: RJF
Album: Pep Rally
Label: Unsigned
In hip-hop years, which tends to be an young man’s game, I’m somewhere between Soulja Boy and Jay-Z, so when I heard DJBooth newcomer Hoodie Allen’s mixtape standout cut I was filled with nostalgia for a time when your boy would call with an announcement: Party at the Beach House! While producer RJF’s beat isn’t quite the party-inducing jam you might expect (is it just me or does the beat have a vaguely melancholy feel?) the record still has that good times vibe. Vocally the 21-year-old NYC emcee keeps the partying moving, dropping mellow, summertime filled verses overflowing with everyman appeal and pop culture references: “Killin out east / gotta rock Lola / only fam matters like I’m Carl Winslow / pop in the roadtrip / I got the windows low s**t.” I’m sure Hoodie’s heard it all before, but with a clever, party-loving flow like this, let the Asher Roth comparisons commence in 5, 4, 3…. Looking to do some more partying alongside Hoodie? Feel free to join his Pep Rally, a.k.a. the man’s new mixtape, available anywhere you can get an internet connection right now.

I have heard lots and lots of material over the past year from Hoodie and all of it was just okay. On his new project, I can tell he is maturing and really finding his musical lane. Thus, he landed a feature at the Booth and is headed in the right direction. Good stuff here.

Ha when I started this I swear I thought it was Wiz just cause of that high pitch but nahh this is just a asher roth image and his portrayed way of life. Sounds like them combined which is not sounding so great.

Very different from Mickey's dud. I hear influences from all over on this track. Quincy Jones style production, (think Will Smith's "Summertime"). Asher Roth's flow with a dash of Outasight quirky wordplay.

Its nothing special, I mean its a decent tune, but nothing someone would want to religiously listen to. One time listen is all its getting from me really.

An enjoyable record that's frankly not quite enough to really impress me, but enough to make me interested in hearing some more from Hoodie.
And I know I brought it up, but the Asher comparison isn't entirely fair. Their music seems to come from a white, middle class background, but their flows really aren't particularly similar. |

His "Pep Rally" mixtape is one of the best I've heard in a long, long time.
