Haffa - So Gully
Artist: Haffa
Producer: Scram Jones
Album: The Cookup Mixtape
Label: Beast Music Records
Just how street is Brooklyn rapper Haffa? Well, let’s just say that if he were any more street, his clothes would be covered in tire treads. As evidence, I present So Gully, the first official leak off the Booth newcomer’s forthcoming mixtape. Rapper/producer Scram Jones mans the boards on this gritty track, borrowing a vocal sample from 50 Cent‘s Disco Inferno to serve as the centerpiece of his tense, percussion-synth beat. For his part, Haffa comes with aggressive flows to match Scram’s grimy boardwork, peppering his hard-nosed bars with polysyllabic rhymes: “There’s a war goin’ on outside, no man is safe from / so I keep a bulletproof and a space gun / and I emerge from the jungle where the apes hung…” Does this hood-certified up-and-comer have what it takes to hustle his way to the top of the game? Speculation is welcome, but we won’t know for sure till March 12, when The Cookup (presented by Scram) hits the ‘net.

Scram Jones is a beast behind the boards. To be honest, I am more enamored with the production work than I am Haffa's rhymes. He doesn't do anything bad, he just doesn't captivate the eardrums. I am anxious to hear what else the two have in-store on the upcoming mixtape.

I read somewhere that Scram expects a "big" remix from this record.

@DjKidd Considering Before I Self Destruct was Fiddy's lowest selling album, I think everyone misses the old 50.
Anyway, Haffa impressed me on this. He sounds hard as hell but still has a lyrical element to him, he even went super underground and included a Mos Def My Life is Real sample. Again, impressive. |

They went a little overboard with the vocal sample, tad forced and bit too repetitive for my liking. Overall, I'm looking forward to hear more from "The Cookup Mixtape" in future. 2.5

Scram Jones picks the right beat and sample...but Haffa's verses (after the intro) are just average. However, something tells me he'll make plenty more awesome music in the future, especially with more Scram Jones beats. Giving it a 3 for now, but you'll see more 4s and 5s later on...I have a feeling about that!

Not at all, this tries way too hard to be hard, and in its effort to reach that goal, its not.
