It’s not that I hate Gucci Mane, it’s just that I’m not quite sure why seemingly every artist on the planet wants him on their track. What about the man is so great? With that in mind please know that it’s almost difficult for me to say this, but I’m kinda digging Gucci’s new single Spotlight. On the production tip Polow Da Don comes through again with a densely layered, synth heavy and damn catchy beat, while Gucci flips his sometimes annoying rhyme style into a memorable flow that may just stay in your head for days (I mean, the man does hilariously reference Elimidate). And add Usher to the chorus, delivering an old-school R&B hook? I’ll admit it, Spotlight’s my new guilty pleasure. Don’t you judge me. Fans of Gucci should check stores, and DJBooth, for more when his new album The State vs. Radric Davis drops this December.

I've gotta go with the very generic and repetitive (but true) statement : Everything was hot except Gucci. Alright, he wasn't that bad...but compared to that HOT beat from Polow and Usher's crazy hook, Gucci came in 3rd. His flow was decent, but this is still single material nonetheless.

Gucci does seem to be on every track right now, thats bad for hip hop!

I saw this on hotnewhiphop.com today, and i was like "oh gucci, well im definitely not listening to that" then i saw it on here and read the review, and thought i should listen to it, but i probably should have stuck with my gut instinct!

But this does have that kinda flow that would be stuck in my head, same with the hook, which is insane in my opinion

this may be the first gucci song to end up on my ipod!

Usher and Polow made a great track! The only problem was Gucci. I seriously gave him a chance on this track. I wanted to like him, but he simply sucks. 1 star to make a point

cb126405, I couldn't have said it better.

Why do respectable artists work with this man? I think less of Usher now than I did when he released a song based on legal documents.

I want a a remix...

production is tight, usher's hook is good (though im not a fan of his work on guest hooks) & even Gucci came with some decent rhymes.

maybe I should jump on the Gucci bandwagon since the rest of the residents are so against him, haha

3.5

People are really starting to scare me with the acceptance of Gucci's "flow". Witnessing a car accident may also stay in my head for days, that doesn't mean it's a good thing.

What is wrong with his voice/diction?! How can that not ruin the song after 3 seconds (literally) for you?! His delivery is awful!

I almost thought this was a re-tread of Love in this Club.
I'm not a big fan of Gucci either (maybe i should listen to him more?) but i'd prefer more stuff like Wasted, 1 of my fav songs of the year.

this aint a bad track and it works in the clubs

Respectable artists work with the man for 2 reasons. One, he's blowing up right now and is one of the most watched artists in the game. Two, he has one of the if not the best FLOW (notice i said flow, not overall rapper) in the game. I feel like he makes other rappers step their flow up when they're on the track with him. Sure there lyrics might be better but next to a verse with an amazing unmatched flow, no matter how good the lyrics are it sounds crappy. An example is a couple of the new Snoop Dogg and Gucci songs, feel like snoop killed his flow on these tracks.

Onto the song: while not my favorite of guccis he still has a great memorable flow as usual and creative visual lyrics and usher and the beat are nice. Banger.

Also, listen closely, its not hard to hear what he says and if you don't want to focus on his lyrics than his flow will blend in with the beat cause his flow is almost always on and don't worry bout it.

@frozilla - Why not Ludacris? It's a safe bet he annihalates Gucci in every aspect. Even Nelly with his losing streak bests Gucci's flow and lyrical ability. Why not Chamillionaire?

Hook sounds like one Akon sing but passed it along to Ursh. I like Gucci but I his commerical sound on this one is subpar. He doesn't even sound like the same Gucci from before he "blew up."

The song sounds like it was created for someone else (anyone else) and then Gucci's label people scooped it up for him and had Usher record some new ad libs. Am I off? Polow killed the production, but the vocals didn't match.

@phantom its hard to explain, to me personally I think its the fact that he's on multiple drugs when he records his songs that he taps into this flow that is much different than another artist would have on a track to the point where it kind of becomes part of the beat. I too am a great fan of ludacris but I feel like his flow is more like pow pow pow punchlines and harder than a really crazy flow. Also, a lot of gucci songs vary in the flow. To me chamillionaire is all about the lyrics and to me his flow isn't that great. Idk, i think we're in a way using different definitions of the word "flow". Nelly I agree is capable of great flow on multiple tracks, for example I really enjoyed "Long Night ft. Usher".

Another thing I find about Gucci songs is that many of them I start out thinking... "hmm...what this all about..?" and then after a few more lines i'm nodding my head and feel like i'm bumping to the music in a different way than listening to other rappers songs. I've only starting liking Gucci's material since he came out with Photoshoot, but I feel like the way he sounds with the instrumental is unmatched on some tracks. And the fact he's been putting out tracks like crazy like wayne was doing has really pushed him ahead recently.

I fail to understand why Gucci Mane is so popular. He doesnt posses any qualities that somebody who calls themselves a rapper needs to have. terrible flow, terrible lyrics, annoying tone, cliche subject matters......why gucci why!
okay on to the song...

3 stars for Usher - His hook was good, but kind of repetitive, however if Gucci wasnt so mediocre then it wouldnt stick out as the memorable bit of the song!

4 stars for the beat - Polow keeps it coming with the fire! He's been keeping it coming over the past few months ("Number One Sex", "Drop It Low", "Back To The Crib", "Medicine", "Baby By Me" and so on) This is no exception!

1 star for gucci - As the booths' rating system tells us; 1 star means 'GARBAGE'

Overall - 2 stars

Effing hot beat! Effing sexy hook by Usher.

Not feeling Gucci though. It ruins the mood of the song. If only Polow jumped on the song to take the "Spotlight" away from Gucci a bit more.

Seriously what is it with all these Gucci songs and features?

People wonder why Talented artist like Usher & Wayne works wit em'... It's because right now , Gucci is as popular as he has ever been..The production is classic alone..This is a top 5 record...period.. & I'm definitely copin' Gucci's New album when it drops...BURR!!!!

The production is great on this track and Usher comes through on the hook. But Gucci Mane fails to do his part. Im not the type of person to give an artist a pass cause it's catchy song or it has a bangin beat. You have to impress me with some substance in your music, it doesn't have to be lyrical, but at least rap about some reality real @*#$!. No more pop rap songs. Im tired of those type of songs.
