The 215th entry in DJBooth.net and Streetammo‘s Exclusive Freestyle Series comes courtesy of Goines, the Arkansas representative (and Suga City member) who brought us Lead by Example: Leaders are Real People 2 back in May. On The Making of the Black Icon, his second contribution to the series (see also #170, Leader of the New School), the Conduit Entertainment signee flows over a will.i.am-produced beat originally featured on Game‘s Compton. Goines is currently putting the finishing touches on a new project entitled It’s Gotta Be Black, set to drop later this month.

 We don't usually let artists participate more than once in the Freestyle Series, but Goines knocked out a second entry without any invitation and it was simply too good to be shelved. While I was never a huge fan of the will.i.am "Compton" beat, I like what Goines does over the production. In fact, after re-listening to Game's version, and then to Goines freestyle, there is no question who suits the beat the best. Just saying.

Yet again, I'm impressed with how you laced this track. Your vocals and rhyme scheme make any beat seem better. Plus add to the fact that you spit lyrical venom that burns to the core of what people NEED to hear. This is dope and I would give a 5, but I know you will always top that on the next one. HOLLA

Goines goes in on this. The beat and verses are hard. A very enjoyable song. I agree with DJ Z, im not really a big will.i.am fan, but this is nice. This just isnt enough to be a Banger. In rotation for me.

Yes sir, now this is how it's done. There are still a lot of folks sleeping on Goines, but with more records like this, it's only a matter of time until the world wakes up.
