Gilbere Forte' - 1st Floor
Artist: Gilbere Forte'
Producer: Aislyn (of Passion Pit)
Album: 87 Dreams Mixtape
Label: EPIC
Ladies and gentlemen, it’s time to put on your hip-rock goggles for this joint (don’t worry, it’s not the Creed/Fat Joe combo you’ve had nightmare’s about). Gilbere Forte’ is back in the Booth for his second feature (the first was My Time), this time accompanied by the oddly named band Freelance Whales for mixtape track 1st Floor. While the production may feel a little odd on the first listen, Aislyn (of indie rock’s Passion Pit) manages to blend with Forte’ and Whales to make a hauntingly smooth beat that will make listeners feel like they’re in the front row of a live concert. Lyricism isn’t lost among the cacophony of instrumentals, as Forte’ puts another talented foot forward with his uplifting messages: “Open up your eyes when you look in the sky, let my music be your wings when you’re ready to fly.” If you enjoyed keeping your lighters up for this one, be sure to check Gilberte Forte’s upcoming project, 87 Dreams Mixtape, due out in late June via DJBooth.

Big fan of Gilbere. So much so, in fact, that we offered his camp the chance to host his new mixtape at the Booth. Love the rap/rock mix here; isn't forced at all. What's next?

I had to go back and listen to the original 1st Floor from the Freelance Whales (crazy name, by the way) and it only made me appreciate Gilberte's lyrical additions even more. They pump up the energy and make this an incredibly unique, and uniquely dope, cut.
I love being surprised by new music, especially new music that puts me onto something new. Props. |

I love how production choices has changed drastically in the past few years of hip-hop. I know who made it cool.
There's a real sense of urgency and emotion in Gilbere's flow, like he has something to prove to everyone willing to listen to him at this moment, and it’s difficult not to be completely enveloped by an engrossing lush, melodic soundscape. This will soundtrack late night drives for someone with too much to think about lonely and troubled burn of contradictions and desire. |

Just from the intro alone I didn't expect this track to take the direction it took. Overall though, I'm not gonna lie, I enjoyed this song from start to finish. Gilbere's delivery and lyrics clearly depict that of a hungry emcee looking for his place in the spotlight. The vocals contributed were a big plus and the relaxed and smooth production tip makes this a Banger!

This is rap/rock done right. I actually have the Freelance Whales album already. And this song was great originally. I would of liked for the producer to integrate the song's harmonies a bit more, but its otherwise a great song. Shout out to Passion Pit, also a great band. I'm definitely going to check Gilbere's mixtape.

I only listened to his previous song because STS was on it. Their song was decent. This song...is awesome. The Freelance Whales sample is ridiculous. Indie band, check them out, you'll love it if you like anything besides rap.
Good job Forte. |

ISN'T THIS WHAT HIP HOP IS SUPPOSED TO BE?
UNIQUE SETTING ONES SELF APART YET MAINTAINING A CERTAIN LEVEL OF HOTNESS? I LOVE THE MIXING ON THIS FLOW AND BEAT TOGETHER IS NIIIIIICE. |

LISTENED FOR:
3:00 THOUGHTS: Love the sample hook...He sets himself aside from the regular hiphop pack with this. He kind of leans on the instrumental a tad but it has replay value |
