Game - It Must Be Me

I started listening to The Neptunes (or N.E.R.D. for you throwback fans) in my younger years, and since then I’ve realized that their beats are just not meant for every artist. That being said, Game‘s new street single It Must Be Me proves that he can handle whatever out-of-this-world production The Neptunes throw at him (which is a good thing, since leader Pharrell Williams is co-producing his next album, along with super producer and career mentor Dr. Dre). Game does what he knows best on the song, pushing hard lyrics with an even harder voice, all while the tempo changes about as many times as your girl does before she goes out. If this is the first real taste we get for the R.E.D. Album drop, then I will most definitely be hungry for more. Be sure to keep it locked to the Booth for the Justin Timberlake-assisted radio single coming in the next few weeks, leading up to the June 15 album drop.

This song first appeared on the Rap Chart on April 19, 2010

When I spoke with him this past winter, Game promised me some bangers. I've waited patiently. Then out of nowhere - with no warning or release date given - we get the "official" street single. While its slightly less than I'd hope for, its a huge step up from the last few "street/buzz" records Game left us with.

With Pharrell and the good Doctor behind him on this new album I don't see how it could possibly be anything but a good listen - right?

Lyrically, this song is ON POINT!
Even if a lot of Pharrell's productions sound the same, I'm feeling this one. Definatly good for a street single.

Definatly NOT "Game over"

Okay, I can deal with this. Maybe he ins't done after all. While I have never been a fan of Neptunes production, this isn't horrible. Lyrically is where this track stands out...but its nothing memorable.

I hate to say this, but ever since I heard @*#$! Fight with Gay J and Ester Dean, Game has been consistently been releasing some pretty bad material (excluding Diamonds with K-Young) and thats hard for me to say cause Game has been one of my top favorites since the Documentary.

On the lighter note, this track lyrically is not that bad, but Pharrell's production never really suits my style of taste. Overall, this song earns a solid 2.5 from me.

I'm not quite sure what it is about this single that has had the internet buzzing all day. The production is strong but Game doesn't come with anything noteworthy; not to mention the chorus is pretty awful. If Game doesn't step his game up, R.E.D. album's future isn't looking so bright.

On a sidenote - Where's Nathan S.? I noticed he's stopped posting on RefinedHype? My days just don't seem complete without hearing one of witty comments; his absence has actually deprived me of sleep.

Craziest colab ever? I'm all for criss-crossing and breaking down genre barriers but Pharrell and The Game don't belong in the same sentence much less the credits for a track. The Game is pretty one dimensional on this, its like he wasnt even listening to the production and already had something written to just throw on it. As for the hook....I don't even want to talk about it.

When all hope was lost Game returns with solid material. Well actually it's not his best, it dosen't come close to songs off The Documentary or Docotor's Advocate, but compared to the horrible Shake and the even worst Pu**y Fight. This isn't that bad. But that dosen't mean much, like I already mentioned those songs were unbearable.

So if I had to breakdown the song, The Neptune's beat is bad though not their best but still good. It's really Game who's the weak link, he's repetitive with the same old gangsta cliches. Hopefully for Game's career all these leaked songs are just the worst songs off the album. Damn, after listening to this again, I really hope.

FINALLY a decent track from this guy! The production goes hard, but not as good as older Neptunes beats. Glad Pharrell's executive producing his album though. The lyrics are tight, btw!

I thought The Game was done for after that single featuring Gucci, @*#$! Fight, and Shake. Those tracks were commercial bull. This track is a step in the right direction. The production isn't perfect for Game, but he adapted well. Not feelin the Will Smith/I Am Legend wordplay though. Everyone, including Game, has already spit that line. This restored my faith in the R.E.D. Album.

Being a Game fan since the now famously classic "Documentary" i was beginning to seriously get pissed off at these wack singles he was releasing!!
I'm guessing it was the people at his label trying to get some buzz going but Game fans know who Game is and his style and those f**ken singles just didn't cut it!!
Now on to the track....
It's a step in the right direction but it's still missing that "sound" to really get radio to play it!!
Come on Game I seen some studio sessions with 1500 Or Nuthin on Youtube and DAM some of those sessions were straight FIRE!!!!
Release some of those as singles and your back on your documentary grind!!

To be honest, I am not a big fan of this. I wouldn't call it really bad, but let's just say I wouldn't listen to it again. The beat in the background only served to annoy me, and his flow was less than average. I think he has some potential, but he didn't capitalize on it here.

I have been real real worried about R.E.D. Big Money and Crazy were not acceptable for the game, it was, as he would say, "bubble gum rap." Finally a track where Game actually spits like he should.

I'm really loving The Neptunes backed production too. It is spot on with what Game is putting down. When I heard Pharrell was going to be co-producing this album I was hoping production like on this song would pop up.

Also, definitely some different vocal work by Game on this one. Can definitely see how Pharrell is rubbing off on him.

I feel much better about this album now. I really was worried about where it might be heading. LAX was a decent effort and Dope Boyz off of that was huge for me. Hopefully Game can come through again and show that he doesn't need Curtis to make an album sell.

I like this! The Neptunes' production isn't fantastic, but it's still pretty good; and Game does good lyrically. Hopefully with Dr Dre and Pharrell producing for him, his album will turn out better than the other songs he released fro m it. Overall, it's a good street single. At least 3.5 in my opinion.

Crappola, those horns are as annoying trying to explain how I can like someone with that obnoxious face tat. I thought I was used to The Neptunes production stylings, but damn is it annoying this time around

The Game brings back his rock solid flow, and his rhymes were good, so I'd only recommend this to die hard Game fans.

Everyone else, skip it.

Over a revamped version of "Doorman", though noticeably less bangin, Jayceon Terrell Taylor get loose and don't disappoint, but I can't say the same about that hook. Not only its written poorly, but Pharell stressin to make it sound cool than it is a fail in itself.

Game was someone that i thought was gonna be not only a mainstay but a true legend by now. well it hasnt really worked out for him like it could have. he still has to cling onto beefs to gain buzz but what he doesnt know is that pulls away interest in his actual music

but i digress lets look at "it must be me" this basically a typical Game joint with HARD flow with "gangsta" lyrics. i hav seen this be before so i am not like thrown away by it. its ok i guess and production is sound it was a bit average. i hope this is just a teaser and theres more greater things to come

I agree that this is definately better then the material Game was droping late last year, though its not something I would put in my rotation (banger or above). Lyrically Game was pretty good, the production was alright, something was missing from it though (cant figure out what it is though).

Overall... good street single, here's to hoping Game can deliver a radio smash for his first single.

3.5

Game goes hard and hes almost back to his old form. Key word is ALMOST. He really hopes he steps his game up because he used to be one of my favorite artists.

The beat is good enough to get the job done and Game goes hard as usual, I think whats lacking is the hook. It seems soft and slow compared to the verses Game spits.

I don't think Game is thirsty for the industry. His lyrical talents displayed here are non-existent considering what Game is capable of delivering. I think Game needs to search within himself to find that hunger he once had that was displayed all over his first album. I think thats the curse with some artists who put out a classic album as their first album, they never truly seem to reach that pinnacle of artistic success again. Some examples might include but not limited to: Nas, Blackstar, and yes even Jay-Z.

when shake first came out i was more impressed and inspired by that. the beat is pretty cool and game rhymes hard but the chorus is super lame and really slows the song down. "sumtin hot in here it must be me"? i mean come on. super lame.

shake had me wayyy more exciting and had me jacked up for this album. this takes it down a peg or two. hopefully the other advance singles put this album back into the "can't wait for it's release" category.

Who comes harder on a track other than Game?! Maybe Ludcaris but damn Game always brings the energy. This is 327404948 times better then "Shake" or "Big Money"...somehow though "Shake" gets radio play on XM/Serius on the hip-hop channels.
Now to dissect this track...Pharrell's contribution on hear to the hook was something I could have lived without. And his production is always simple and sounds the same on many other tracks produced by The Neptunes. Game still brings it though regardless of the beat and I will be jamming this in my car this summer. Game referenced Scarface again as he did in "My Life"...I guess he has something against Al Pacino...but he always spits fire...enough said.
