The Freshmen - Dreamin' California
Artist: The Freshmen
Producer: THX
Album: Ode To Freshmen Year
Label: Unsigned
As a resident of the chilly Midwest, I’ve heard it said that without the bitter winters we wouldn’t appreciate the summer sun – but I don’t really buy it. As they explain on newly-released single Dreamin’ California, Contact trio The Freshmen treasure their home state’s beautiful weather so much that, despite its rough spots, they wouldn’t, well, dream of living anywhere else. THX‘s guitar/piano beat, not sampled from but reminiscent of the Mamas and the Papas’ classic single California Dreamin’, set a nostalgically retro mood as rappers A. Wolf and Kristo paint a realistic but affectionate portrait of the Golden State’s major hotspots, taking listeners all the way from the Bay down to Hollywood. Needless to say, this track has “summer jam” written all over it. Those craving more warm-weather music from the Left Coast threesome will be able to find what they seek on their debut studio album, Hello There, scheduled to hit online retailers and record stores everywhere sometime next month.

As most of our regular readers probably know by now, our very own Nathan S. calls West Hollywood home. While I am miles and miles away in Chicago, I usually live vicariously through Nathan and his always sunny abode. Not that I needed another reason to love the west coast, The Freshmen have given me one.
Refreshing and completely geared for summer-time spins, this record is rotating as I type this sentence. |

Wow this was great. All the elements came together flawlessly and that piano in the production is just so addicting. The Freshman's name doesn't do them justice because they sound as if they have been doing this for years. Definitely an above average effort from these newcomers.
All three verses were insane and the production is @*#$!. Dope verses, dope hook and a eclectic group of sounds banded together in the production make this a near-classic for me. Looking forward to hearing more. |

I absolutely love their vibe. The production is amazing. I was a fan after first hearing Hello There and to me, dreamin cali seems to be it's Hip Hop alter ego. Maybe I'm biased because I live in the sunshine state or maybe it's because this song sets the tone for a new sound that Hip Hop has been desperately needing. Sounds like a cross between 60's rock, 90's hip hop and 2010 pop... Their twitter says "if the beach boys could rap they would have sounded like The Freshmen". I get it. Great song.

Ah California, my adopted home. It's the greatest state in the country...unless it's being engulfed by riots and earthquakes.
Loved the hook on this one, and I dig how ambitious the beat is. Sounds like a super-updated Pharcyde, and that's a hell of a compliment. Dopeness. And as long as Z brought it up, if you really want to piss him off, just mention how much better the weather is in L.A. than Chicago. It does not go over well. Ha . |

There wasn't much not to like here. The production was on point and the vocals definitely killed it. You can expect to hear this on the radios.

on point! I really like the execution of this track. The piano really plays a great role in this and pulls the song to another platform. 5 stars!

This sure as hell is a lot better than Katey Perry's song about Cali.
I knew from the piano intro this song would be dope and it carried throughout the song. Great flow. Its a song I could totally picture myself listening to at 5:30 in the morning, driving home from a California party. Where can I download this? |
