Freeway - Hustle Baby
Artist: Freeway
Producer: Oddz.N.Endz
Album: Diamond in the Ruff
Label: Babygrande
After belching away the last bubbles of NYE champagne and sweeping up pieces of shot glasses, the next thing on the “hate to do” list is to see what kind of trash piled up in my inbox. Luckily, something like an anthem from Freeway appeared instead. Hustle Baby reminds folks that their job in 2011 is to get roxy in their occupation, whatever that may be. Positive in its projection, the Freestyle Alum brings his rugged, roughneck mannerisms to a concept that’s a hip-hop New Years’ resolution: hustle hard to play harder. As the lead act for the newly formed G-Unit Philly, Free recruits production team Oddz.N.Endz for the record, sampling Mary J. Blige‘s vocals from I’m A Hustla (Remix), the hit single from fellow Philidelphian, Cassidy. Though the beat has a lot of components that make it a wide-eyed affair, it’s built on sound-effects that are meant to alarm listeners. Hustle Baby will find a home on Free’s forthcoming album, Diamond In the Ruff, which was set to release after Philadelphia Freeway but has yet to debut. Maybe he’s waiting for the Chinese New Year. I should have some new shot glasses by then.

How you can listen to "Hustle Baby" and not want to press replay at the end of the song? Seriously, this is why they invented to the loop button on streaming players. Kudos to our friends Oddz.N.Endz for killing the production with the well-done sample work.

I had this on repeat as well the first day I heard it. The production is fresh and I love how Freeway shouts out to the masses. A banger that will make sure you stay on top of your grind.

Freeway's different approach toward the end of 2010 excited me for what's to come in '11. I like what I'm hearing so far in this record. The sample was dope and just had that wow factor the whole way through.

I gotta put this out there about ANY TRACK, regardless of genre, I HATE the air horns in music, it serves absoliley no purpose whatsoever. As for Freeway, he impressed with solid bars but nothing out of the ordinary for him here.

You gotta love a "hustle" song that isn't quite the normal hustler anthem. What really made me happy was the shoutout to the "teachers that make the kids day sunny." Way to shout out to all the important people out there, Free! The production was sick even if it did give me ADD, and the message is a great one.

I was so hoping for a gritty, grimey Freeway track... "Hustle Baby"!
Alas, I was left feeling like... "I Know I Can" (Nas). I guess we all must mature, 10+ years later. Underneath the guise of this feel good track, I still heard that recognizable flow. The lyrics were cool for the purpose of the track... so maybe this will open him up for some commercial rotation but I can't wait to hear the rest. |

I continue to be impressed by Free's ability to navigate mainstream hustle rap with more "underground" lyricism and blue collar appeal. It feels a little strange not to hear him over Jake One beat, but I'll take a new track like this any day.

The beat is fire but I expected and wanted a more aggressive flow and lyrics from free but this knocks in the whip.

i really like freeways style and most of his production, but the "hustle" & the "ey ey" vocal in this one is IMO just annoying. it doesnt really fit to the rest of the production. without it,it would be in rotation,no doubt
