Freeway - HAM Extreme
Producer: Young L (of The Pack)
Album: Diamond in the Ruff
Label: Unsigned
Back in January, Kanye West and Jay-Z taught listeners everywhere that H.A.M. isn’t just something you eat for breakfast (or not, depending on your faith). Today, Freeway is here to do them one better – not satisfied with going as “Hard as a motherf*cker,” the Philly street veteran (and headliner at our unofficial SXSW showcase!) shows us what HAM Extreme sounds like on this newly-leaked album inclusion. The Pack‘s Young L handles production duties, flipping Coldplay’s The Hardest Part into a beat befitting a grind anthem (no opera samples or choral interludes here). As usual Freeway keeps it real (and halal) on the microphone, showcasing his inimitably gruff flow as he affirms his willingness to do whatever it takes to get his paper up. To keep it one-hundred, though, I’m not sure how I feel about living in a world where declarations of loyalty to the streets can exist in such close proximity to Dr. Seuss and Hoobastank references – your thoughts, Booth readers? Whatever your take on the matter, you’ll want to keep it locked for all the latest on Freeway and Diamond Supply Co.‘s Diamond in the Ruff LP, coming soon to record stores and online retailers.

Freeway continues to grow as an artist and in doing so he has become more flexible, versatile, and impressive. Watching - and listening - to the process has been a pleasure.

Note to artists: THIS is how you evolve! Freeway's improved his lyricism and flow ability with every song on the booth...this is just EPIC. (I even like how he's noted that he himself doesn't eat ham, but can still make plenty on the mic).
The beat is a banger, too...Young L's come a LOOONG way since that "Vans". At this point, I believe it's safe to say "Diamond in the Ruff" is the most anticipated independent hip-hop album of 2011...anybody else concur? |

Sometimes I find myself feeling disappointed in Freeway. He shows flashes of brilliance, but other times he comes up short. This is not one of those times. Freeway's passion and authenticity come through on this song. His gritty sound and lyrics compliment the Coldplay flip very well. I'm lookin forward to "Diamond In The Ruff" and hope the rest of the tracks match "Ham Extreme".

The rating system is a little whack... problem is people give him 4-5 stars because of who he is rather than just on the track itself. Comparing him to other indy's then sure he gets a 5, but as the track as a whole. 3..... sorry to bust the bubble...

Beat is on point & Freeway had 2 strong verses, but lost momentum on the 3rd one. I was tempted to just turn him off after "green eggs" but overall solid track.

not my cup of tea, the recording of the vocals in relation to the beat throws the track off to me

two things grab me as a listener to hip hop, the track and then the vocals. with this i feel the track is hot however listening to freeway lyrically is okay but his voice never grabs me. just okay nothing to get hype about (nor rate it 4-5 stars)
