Imagine you’re an emcee who’s just been released from a longtime contract, and you’re looking over a new deal with a label known to be unreliable in getting its artists’ albums on store shelves.  You definitely want to keep your buzz up in the meantime… what do you do?  Currently in the finishing stages of a deal with Cash Money, Philadelphia rap icon Freewayis focusing all his energy on the streets—fresh off the May release of his Philadelphia Freeway 2 mixtape, he’s already on the verge of dropping another street album, Freelapse.  On newly-leaked track Free Moola,  the emcee gives us all a crash course in free-association lyricism, flexing his high-energy flow over a Just Blaze-esque beat by Phoe Notes.  Due out in August, Freelapse will pave the way for the September arrival of yet another mixtape, Jake One collabo The Stimulus Package.

Freeway might be changing labels, but I am not sure why he also needs to change the direction of his music. He is a grinder. He is a hustler. But he isn't a mainstream-appealing sell-out who should feel the need to make cliche music. This was disappointing to me, but there are legions of Freeway fans who might think otherwise.

Thoughts, people?

@Z - We are seeing a lot of artists switchin up their styles in this day and age. Its all about the paper I guess (I know you probably already know that, thats what I think this is about though).

This is so cliche though. Wow, I did not expect this from Free. I agree he needs to go back to his old style. Beat was tight though.

Freeway has been puttin a lot of good stuff recently (really enjoyed his 'Month Of Madness')but this one def doesn't belong to that type ... But he’s doing the right thing. He’s focusing on the music.

Production is bumping! if approached with originality and style this could've been a banger!
