Though the jury still seems to be split on whether Tyler, the Creator‘s a visionary genius or a kid with a few screws loose (or, y’know, both), the one Odd Future member who everyone seems to agree is going places is Frank Ocean. If you’re one of the few who have yet to jump on the bandwagon – or you were turned off by the acoustic vibes of Ocean’s Booth debut, Pyrite – the Def Jam crooner’s latest single, Novacane, may be just the thing to convert you. Tricky Stewart, Frank’s mentor of several years, mans the boards, serving up a dazed synth backdrop as the singer recounts an affair with an aspiring dentist (and part-time porn star) whose love left him feeling comfortably numb. Begun with an impromptu bong session at last year’s Coachella festival, their relationship quickly blossoms into something more intimate – before long, he’s “feelin’ like Stanley Kubrick” as he films their amorous encounters. Smooth, sexy and just a tad unsettling, this record epitomizes Frank Ocean’s unique appeal. Those who haven’t already copped the project can find more where this came from on February’s Nostalgia, Ultra EP, as well as clicking here to check out Ocean’s latest video, Acura Integurl.
