Fonzworth Bentley - Believe It
Artist: Fonzworth Bentley
Featuring: Faith Evans
Producer: Alex (Don Cheegro) Chiger
Album: C.O.L.O.U.R.S. Mixtape
Label: Bentley Music Group
Is it just me, or has the Booth been lacking a certain… dapperness of late? Oh, we haven’t featured any Fonzworth Bentley-related content in almost a year? That explains it. Here to rectify the situation is the nattily-dressed gentleman himself, with a brand new single of his long-awaited debut album-turned-mixtape, C.O.L.O.U.R.S. On Believe It, Bentley looks back upon his journey as a musician, compressing a memoir’s worth of material into three rapped verses. Flowing over a rolling breakbeat suffused with mellow synth chords courtesy of Alex (Don Cheegro) Chiger, Fonz charts his growth through a series of vignettes, detailing his middle-school struggles to learn the violin, his paternally-spurred stint in an MBA program, and finally a recent confrontation with his own mortality. The moral? With a little faith, you can weather any storm. And by way of happy coincidence, Faith herself – R&B singer Faith Evans, that is – makes a guest appearance, lacing the joint with her radiant hook vocals. So, how ‘bout it: are you craving more colorful tunes from hip-hop’s most foppish dandy? Fonz’ debut street album is set to drop April 22 (Good Friday), coinciding with the online debut of Kanye‘s G.O.O.D. Friday SXSW showcase.

Nas he is not, but Fonz is as engaging an emcee (if you want to call him an emcee) as there is. His flow is laughable, but his vocals entertain and at the end of the day that is what its all about. Not to mention - Ms. Evans doesn't just jump on anyone's record.

Maybe if we didn't focus on Rap but on making soul music, music would be better. Fonz is starting to prove that.

It truly has been awhile since Fonz came up with something. The beat is just sick, sick, and um...sick, I find Fonz's flow amusing (and for some odd reason engaging, but that's because I haven't heard from him and I really wanted to hear f'sho), and Faith Evans' vocals on top of it all leaves me satisfied.

I’m really digging the beat, but I am not the biggest fan of Mr. Bentley. Evans does a great job, and I think she outshines Bentley with her impressive vocals. As much as I want to like this song, Bentley’s flow seems a little off and feels too forced for me to really enjoy this track.

The beat stands out and Ms. Evans has always been quality and she delivers, definitely feeling the chords running through the track. Fonz tried to step it up so I can't fault him too much.

Can't see me really playing this much, even with Faith's vocals...
