Able to craft hard-hitting, sampled rap beats and retro soul instrumentals with equal ease, Focus is nothing if not versatile. Now calling himself TheRealFocus…, the Aftermath in-house producer has undertaken perhaps his toughest challenge yet: on his latest project, he will recreate the sounds of some of the greatest beatsmiths of all time – starting, of course, with his legendary label boss. With booming bass, a laid-back rhythm and of course, that unmistakable synth whine, this Homage to Dr. Dre is drenched in its namesake’s trademark style. A Dre tribute wouldn’t be complete without guest bars from a few hot West Coast emcees, and this track’s lineup doesn’t disappoint. After Crooked I‘s opener, which finds the Long Beach vet reminiscing about his days with Death Row, Jay Rock (whose exclusive freestyle is also featured tonight!) jumps on board to list off a few of the legend’s many accomplishments and Holla (Remix) up-and-comer Kida delivers his own brand of lyrical nostalgia on the back end. Topped off with the smooth hook vocals of Marsha Ambrosius, HtDD will undoubtedly be music to the ears of Left Coast devotees. For more bangers dedicated to the production greats, grab Focus’ Pay Homage LP, due out in 2010.

This is a worthy track to pay homage to Dre. All the verses are hot, and the production is perfect for a track like this. The same goes for the hook. Hot track.

Focus really did a good job with the production. This is a great homage track. Crooked I kicked it off real nicely and the track stayed at a high level throughout. Hook was tight too.

Crooked I is sick!

This would be a great track, if it were not for the fact that Marsha Ambrosius didn't do Parliament, Parliament Funkadelics, or P-Funk any justice on the hook. "One Nation Under A Groove" is my favorite song and she defaced it.

I have a few problems with this record. The production is great, but why not go with a more Dre-sound on a Dre homage track? The guest spots are all okay, but Crooked I kills it and they lead off with him. The song tails after his contributions end. And as a few members pointed out, the hook work is weak. I'll rotate it for the beat and concept, but this could have been classic.

The real star of this track is the production, Focus really nailed that updated, old school west coast sound that Dre pioneer. Lyrically it's a mixed bad, Crooked kills it but the verses from Kida and Jay Rock are solid but not incredible.

If you're paying homage to someone as colossal as Dre I think you gotta come harder and that goes for everyone but Crooked I and Focus. I think I would've like to see Game on this track if he came correct and with a homage to his #1 name drop I think he prolly would. I don't know who'd you get to sing the hook but I'm not impressed.

Gotta agree with @Nathan - production is a real winner. Focus, supplies a beat that I'm sure the doctor will be pissed he couldn't score some ghost producing rights for. Crooked I on first verse was extra tight, raw rhyme schemes. Jay Rock and Kida weren't bad by any means, but may not be as in-depth as many Dre aficionados would've liked. Still, its a West Coast BANGER!!!
