It’s been a few months now since we first heard about Fashawn’s upcoming Champagne and Styrofoam Cups album, but you know what they say; you can’t rush perfection, or dope odes to your hometown. New release One More Try finds producer Hecktik flipping one of the more unlikely samples in hip-hop history, adding some west coast bounce to Timmy T’s early ‘90s hit of the same name for a nostalgia drenched instrumental. Lyrically, Fashawn uses One More Try to pay tribute to both the joys and struggles that came growing up in his both to his Fresno hometown, explaining that the hustle was part of his everyday life: “Vito in his British Knights / sissy singing in the kitchen, step dad whippin white.” Joining in is Fashawn’s 1,000 Palm Trees partner Omar Aura, who lays down an equally affecting ode to those he’s lost. While we’re still awaiting a release date on Champagne and Styrofoam Cups, those hungry for new music from Fashawn should be content to give his latest a try, and then one more try.
