Estelle - Freak
Artist: Estelle
Featuring: Kardinal Offishall
Producer: David Guetta
Album: All of Me
Label: Home School/Atlantic
The dreaded (quasi)sophomore jinx looms large for international star Estelle. (Ok, so her breakthrough album Shine was technically her second, but for all intents and purposes it was her U.S. debut.) The point is; it’ll be hard to top the Grammy Award winning American Boy, but Estelle’s back to give it her best shot on her new single Freak. Produced by the suddenly omnipresent David Guetta who – hold on, I’m trying to find the words to describe this beat without being disrespectful – is heavily 90’s club influenced, Freak is a notable departure for the usually flirty Estelle, who here seems to be only be interested in American boys, or in the case of guest star Kardinal Offishall Canadian boys, who own handcuffs and fetish gear. Basically, if you’ve been dying to hear Estelle do a techno-remix of Kelis’ Milkshake, your prayers have been answered. Will Estelle manage to rise above the (quasi)sophomore-jinx? We’ll find out whenever her upcoming and currently unscheduled album All of Me hits stores.

these two look like they could be siblings...this sounds nothing like a Estelle song but i encourage artist to step out the box...but this is nothing special at all and the hook is a lil annoying....

Everything that Guetta has touched lately has turned to gold. While I am not sure this is a good look for Estelle, considering how completely different this is from her last project, it could allow a whole new demo to dig into her material. Not my cup of tea, but this will get burned on the dancefloor.

This would work great as a party song, but it can't touch "American Boy." I hope All of Me isn't a sophomore slump for Estelle, because she could easily ride her success for a while.

"Produced by the suddenly omnipresent David Guetta who – hold on, I’m trying to find the words to describe this beat without being disrespectful" - LOL
Anyway I wasn't feeling this at all. Guetta has made some sick beats and is one of my favorite producers but this just got annoying. The hook was too repetitive and no one really shined. |

Props to GStan10 for letting me know my David Guetta joke didn't go completely in vain.
But enough about me...there might be people out there who love this, but I'm not one of them. Big Estelle fan, big Kardinal fan, but on this? I wouldn't be upset if I never heard it again. Sorry. |

I don't hate the beat, but I don't love it either. It reminds me of many songs I like from the 90's, but it's just not good enough to go in rotation. Kardinal's verse is forgettable, and the hook is only cute for a little while.

My first impression of this was “is Estelle really doing this?” Coming for the UK I’ve seen Estelle come from the underground to the star she is today. But real talk, the streets are not going to like this.

David Guetta is the go to producer for club hits atm. Everything he touches atm is becoming a hit. Im not a massive fan of this, but I think there is a good chance this will blow up as well

Estelle is wrong for this one. She should had kept that sound she was going with before. I hope this does not make the cut for anything a mixtape, album, or just radio.
