If you haven’t caught wind of the buzz New York emcee ESSO has garnered as of late, you must have been under a rock. The emcee had a break-through year in 2009, splashing his name across a plethora of publications, from XXL‘s “Show and Prove” to, of course, DJBooth’s Freestyle series. Looking to keep the momentum rolling, he and frequent production partner Woody (who just released his own solo effort, LoveLife) are gearing up to release a collaborative EP titled Californication, consisting of all their recent work that didn’t make it onto previous album The Anti-Socialite or the upcoming The Ascension. The first leak off this compilation project is Someday, an engaging record that finds Woody crafting an infectious beat laced by some Rick Rock-esque percussion. It’s the perfect backdrop for both ESSO and one of the Booth’s favorite Cali natives El Prez to drop rhymes that look back to the legacys of figures like Malcolm and JFK, and look forward to their own impending success. If you’re digging this one, and it’s hard to believe you’re not, you’d be well advised to look out for Californication, due to drop…wait for it…someday soon.

I have a feeling that ESSO (great seeing you this weekend, homie) will make a few new female friends with "Someday." This Woody production sounds like it was crafted for the grown and sexy haha. Very soap opera-esque, but tied together nicely by some dope rhymes. Additional props to guest emcee El Prez (good seeing you this weekend, too), whose style also fits the track well.

Besides nearly the same name as Aussie rap legend 'Eso' that keeps appearing in my mind, what also appears is that this dude is SICK. Over Woody's beat (which is addictive), El Prez en Esso release some relaxed flows that'll keep you wanting more, I know I do. Awesome hook too.

You could do a lot worse when engaging in some Celifornication than this one, a lot, lot worse. (Considering my daughter was born in L.A., I feel qualified to make that statement).
In my constant search for perfection I have to say that the hook falls flat, but otherwise this is nothing but quality. Respect. |
