“If you want to get rich, don’t become a musician,” is a saying that comes up repeatedly in DJBooth interviews, but sometimes words aren’t quite enough to drive the point home. If you’re a visual learner, this video, created by Booth newcomer Epiphany, should give you an idea of just how glamorous the life of a rapper on the come-up really is. The struggle to sell CDs to cash-strapped passers-by may well have inspired this mixtape cut, which finds the Little Rock rapper pooling his spare change with beatsmith Ferocious to come up with a whopping 5 Dollas. Despite being damned near broke, Piph clearly has the skills to pay the bills, as do his collaborators. Ferocious serves up a bouncy beat fueled by swung percussion and bar room piano as the emcee spits agile, engaging verses brimming with recession-friendly swagger, and fellow Ark. native Gina Gee ties it all together with a infectious sung hook. Will Piph’s talent ultimately translate to big bucks? Only time will tell. Those who like what they’re hearing can expect more hip-hop gold in October, when the artist kicks off his Respect mixtape series.

That opening/chorus is crack! This whole track is nutso. Production is sick, sounds like he's on some Outkast ish. Epiphany killed this beat with a sick @$$ flow. You have to be rocking with this one.

I love it from the 1st time I heard "5 Dollas", It let you know that just cause you may be broke, bill still have to get paid, but you dnt need a lot of money or money at all to have a good time. Do think That Epiphany will make it where he wants to go in life, he has the drive and the drive to take a few people with him. I will support this song (CD) and the CD's to come.

This gets my 5 star approval for that crack music! That stuff that you get addicted to real fast! With all the wack ass emcees that are actually in the lime light it makes me wonder where hiphop is really going because it's people like Epiphany that makes you scratch your head and say, "MAN, I DO STILL LOVE HIP HOP!"

The verses are well carried out by the bouncy beat, then Gina Gee comes softly and give the chorus a more epic feel, plus the lyrics/theme are good/optimistic too! A full listening experience.

Love that it's different - a touch of that sing-song flavor that Outkast usually brings with a rock-solid flow and catchy hook. Definitely 4-star worthy. Gives me hope that real underground hip-hop is alive. Plus, I've seen this cat's videos and he can rock a live show - extra star for that.

LOVE THIS SONG!!! Every time I hear it, it sticks in my head until I listen to it again! Being broke myself, I appreciate a good song that reminds me "it's gonna be okay..."

Probably my favorite track of today. That piano line is dope, reminds me a little bit of Idlewild-era Outkast (as cb126405 first said) and Epiphany kills the verses. For every rapper that makes it big there's a thousand that are grinding every day just to pay the rent. Now that's real talk.

This track is fire. The production is dope without being overdone and Piph's flow is crazy. Lyrics are on point, and Gina Gee's hook is catchy as hell.

Other than having really catchy and syncopated keyboard parts, this song brings it home with the great harmony in the vocals--I mean--vocoder-free bliss on a hip-hop song is really saying something.

I think the track's pretty cold.

(Of course I'm biased since it's me.)

LOVE the OutKast-style vibe-Perhaps the most stale topic in hip-hop is the "big money" one. Epiphany is going to go a long way towards changing that aspect, making it cool to be broke again (relatively speaking...)

This is the freshest thing I've heard in a long time. Epiphany's flow on here is outstanding, and the production and chorus are great, and I agree with everyone saying that this is Outkast Esq.
