Eminem - Beautiful
Producer: Eminem
Album: Relapse
Label: Shady/Aftermath/Interscope
Much of the Booth discussion leading up to the release of Relapse revolved around one question: will the “serious Eminem” make an appearance? Lead single We Made You, follow-up 3 AM, and leaked cut Old Time’s Sake showcased Shady’s celeb-baiting, bloodthirsty, and blunted personae (respectively), but where was Marshall Mathers, the earnest, tortured artist who brought us cuts like The Way I Am? As it turns out, he’s right here on track 17, which has now been chosen as the LP’s third single. Over his own downtempo, guitar-driven beat (sampled from Rock Therapy’s Reaching Out), Em spits three cathartic verses centered around his quest to stay true to himself, entreating listeners, “Don’t let ‘em say you ain’t Beautiful.” Brimming with heartfelt pathos, this might not be the most intensely personal track on Relapse (Deja Vu gets my vote), but it’s the perfect record to remind mainstream listeners that behind all the cartoonish humor and maniacal rape/murder fantasies exists a human being with a downright sentimental side—and that divide is what made Em so fascinating to begin with, right?

Wow. The intro is very different. I actually relly like it. This is serious Em!!! It's what I've been waiting for!!! The production is hot, the verses are flame!!! Hook is good as well. This is classic!!!
Now who wants to doubt this man? I honestly dare you to doubt him. |

This was probably one of the better tracks on Relapse, though this still dosnt match up with some of the classic tracks that he has made in the past. 3.5
Im still want Em to adapt to the current trends in hip hop by using some more modern production (seriosuly Em, pick up the phone and give Jonsin or Polow a call, or at least pick Dre beats that have a more modern day approach). |

Well, you ask for it... and now you got it. This is the single version of "Beautiful" - the fast chart riser from Relapse. Personally, one of my favorites on the new album. The fact we rushed this into feature shows the power of the people.

This is classic Em. My personal favorite song on the album. His lyrics are so real on here and the production suits it perfectly. I knew a classic would come out of the album, after a couple sub-par lead singles.

Lyrics
GREAT CONCEPT FIRST OF ALL! There hasn't been a hit inspirational song in awhile but this definetly does the trick! This is personally my favorite song on the album, his slower tempo songs are usually always my favorites on his album... But each verse he delivers some inspirational words, I have been a victim of an event like this myself so I can relate to him perfectly! And personally I think this is what more of the game needs! Production Superb sample, and very nice melody to go with it! Btw... call me wrong all you like but really... I think Em's whole album should've been produced by him (or at least the majority), I personally think he does better over his own production... Listen to The Eminem Show if anyone begs to differ! But I'm not saying Dre and his production on Em's album was corny cause it surely WASN'T. I'm just saying that Eminem probably would've gotten more praise and recogintion for his Relapse album than what viewer's have been giving it now... (Who knows maybe Relapse 2 will have more production by Em') Overall This track is a perfect 5 star classic, and probably one of the top 10 best songs I've heard in 2009 so far. PERFECT! |

I love this song, and I love the sample he used as well. I remember reading in an interview where he said the 1st verse of this song he was still in rehab. He was trying to get over his drug addiction still. Then afterwards he finished it up as he finally cleaned his self. I can't wait to see the video he has lined up for this.

Finally, I've been waiting for this to show up on the booth.
I'll admit it's not his best work but the sample of Reaching Out kinda had that same effect that Stan sample with Dido. It made the song have a more lasting effect. I'm just worried at times how much more he has to talk about. I love the whole idea of the song but I've heard it from him before in other songs. Good presentations and great lyrics and something people can really relate to. This is my favorite song on the album too, and right behind it is Be Careful What You Wish For. Can't wait to see if we'll see more of serious Em in Relapse 2 and not just more of the clowning around stuff. |

The intro starts off the song really well and sets a great tone for the whole song. Really epic intro..this is the Eminem I love to hear. The production is more mainstream but still fits his style and the lyrics are dope. Nice message that he portrays with the lyrics and he brings one of the best hooks I have ever heard from him. I'm lovin this track!

Its also nice to have a song up that still does have the "old eminem" feel to it even tho personally he hasnt changed to me. Everyone is being to quick to judge him off of crack a bottle and we made you and not even giving his cd a listen, and people saying that oh people that like eminems new stuff are just on his jock. This track continues to stand out each time I listen to the album and also when it pops up in random rotation in the library. The intro is outta the ordinary and I like it, and the style of the song is a major departure from the rest of the album.
As a single, it can do well. It's no party song, simply an honest one. The personal feel to it is what can make it big. |

Empathy! Em creates so much empathy with his well crafted lyrics! I wouldn't be surprised if you wish to give him a hug after listening to this...
How great can this man's delivery get? I mean, whoever rhymes "sense of humor" with "tense and gloom I"?! (1:56) Production is genius for using that sample so... beautifully! @Lil Majer: you're crazy for daring to say so, but I agree! :p |

Well I finally copped R3lapse this weekend, and after a few spins I am kinda disappointed in it. Everytime I start to get into a song, Em starts talking about killing everyone or being raped by his fater, etc. Some of the stuff is just plain weird!
With that being said, "Beautiful" is my second favorite song on the CD, following my favorite, "Deja Vu." While I'm not too impressed with the CD overall, "Beautiful" is a classic. |

Classic song that won't get old after 5 plays. Probably will have the most radio success out of all the songs off Relapse... as long as everyone isn't too bored to listen to Eminem after very mediocre tracks like "We Made You" and even "Old Time's Sake." I hope this track really hits the radio hard, just because I'd like to see Eminem receive some legit success. Basically it'd be nice to see him top the Billboard Charts with this song as #1... after all this is the only track that has a chance for real, substantial radio success.

If you recall my album review, I said this was the main one of TWO tracks that I wanted to hear throughout ALL of Em's album. I think if he had of came of out with this as the first single, his album would have....well, wait, his album is doing awesome either way, but I think it would have set better with original EM fans. Sounds like he knows what's up though, and I'm hoping a video follows this and this becomes a classic.
I'm also hoping "Relapse 2" is more tracks like this throughout. |

I'm sorry... this is some @*#$! rap music... I don't know if Eminem's "serious" side was ever something worth listening to. even back in the day when eminem was good. i.e. marshall mathers LP. "cleaning out the closet" or whatever that song was... sucked... You can't mix love with rap. I just can't understand why any of you think that this song is good. "wallowing in self pity rap". it could be a category. this is what every single song like that sounds like... "yo i don't kno if i Control what's goin on in my life, this rap games changed so much sorrow and strife... sometimes i think about takin a shit on this job and jus quittin, but that would be too easy... roll a beezy". i mean... it really isn't good.

@Teddyp - Rap is not just lust or hate. It is any emotion, expressed deeply and intensely. This may not be your type of track, but do not make so bold a statement, when you can't back it up.

I disagree with TeddyP about the serious side of Eminem and the love/rap thing, but I still don't think this track is that good. Eminem's new flow is kinda awkward sounding and it doesn't feel as smooth or precise as his old stuff. And teddyp is right about some of the rhymes being bad. With eminem it used to be like he was just hurling like 3 rhymes per second at you and delivering them so precisely on time it just smacked you in the face. But this track doesn't have a good rhyme scheme or a great delivery. The lyrics are heartfelt, but there's not that much depth. Nothing about this song makes me want to go back and listen again because I got it all the first time I listened. On the upside the production was pretty cool.

I really dunno why, but at times in the first verse it reminds me of "Handlebars" by Flobots. Weird comparison i know.
But as everyone else said (with the exception of a few people who don't get the point) this brings back the memories of when i was a young'n listening to the Marshall Mathers LP. Rapping, in my opinion, is just poetry witta beat, nicely blended. You can talk bout whatever you like, money, haters, women, or even have a more serious song backed by a story, like a lot of songs by Trae, or a few by Chamillionaire just off the top of my head, they're everywhere, i think those are what capture my attention. Now more on this great production, perfect with the sample, and Em just does what he does best. Knoimsayn'? |

D3lit3 - No, I don't think he's kidding. I don't really think he cares if you don't like him, or if I'm his biggest fan; with Eminem, it's never been about pleasing his audience. It's been about him rapping about whatever the hell he wants to rap about. We are merely spectators, onlookers of his past and present. He's not kidding, and honestly, you don't really have to like it.

Yeah I know, but those kind of people really irritate me. I mean, falling into depression and popping pills when he's rich popular, and talented?! He's living a life people only dream about, and is blessed with a gift, and he doesn't seem to appreciate it. He says (well spits on the track) he's depressed because everywhere he goes people know him, and his maids laugh at unfunny jokes. I mean, WTF. People living in Iraq should be depressed. People living in Serbia should be depressed. Not him. |

@D3lit3 - True, but we don't know how hard it is to be Eminem. I know it may seem easy, but we have no idea. If he is rappin like that, it obviously must not be as glamorous as we think it is. It irritates me as well when I see people around me tell me how hard their lives are, just because their 900$ phone broke. But Eminem...it's different with him. I don't know him personally.

You know what this reminds me of? Everybody's skepticism at Kanye's new sound. Honestly though. Eminem's more than likely changed since his last album, and that's affected his sound. So, why hate? It's who he is, and I hope he doesn't change it to please anyone. If he does that, he wouldn't be Eminem anymore.

Don't really like him too much anymore after I stopped liking the funny him on the first 2 albums. I really like this track though. Only thing i would change would be the higher voice over in the chorus - I'd get rid of it, it reminds me too much of his funny persona. I could see his serious side sitting in a chair with a thought bubble over his head with the goofy side singing.

Eminem has influenced the rap game more than any other person in the game right now, don't hate on Em for expressing his feelings instead of the reoccuring song about bitches, pretendin to push weight or kill people.. This song is deep, not as deep as Deja Vu, but its a true expression of what he has become and who he has become. Yea, he does say how he hates the popularity, listen to the song Careful What You Wish For (bonus track), and you will soon realize why.

I love em, in my top 5 of all time.. and this song has some good parts but I think his flow is a bit stifled in this and for all the complaints about his weird tone on a lot of relapse.. stay wide awake is one of the most technically brilliant flows in pop rap history, plus cool grisly lyrics, it was annoying in some songs but it worked a lot of the time I thought.. in the minority I know! Back to the point, I think this songs a little corny at times but still has some real nice moments.. I dont dig the eighties sample though.. leave that stuff where it belongs! I did think that objectively relapse was a great effort for a guy pushing forty.. monumental considering the way hip hop discards the olds..

I honestly didn't thin anything would ever match the emotional response that I got from tunes like Stan, but I was blown away from the first few moments of the song. The sample from Reaching Out is very appropriate, and the slow but deliberate beat delivers an open platform for Em to work his magic with the lyrics.
We don't get too much revelation here about himself. The lyrics are a bit more open-ended that songs like Deja Vu which dive into the head of an addict. What we do get is a trip into the life of someone who's faced hardships, put on different faces, and lived with a desire to be among the normal people. However, it seems that he realizes he can't be like everyone else, so he uses his soapbox to inspired confidence in those that have been put down, offended, and abandoned. This is an excellent track, and my favorite after Deja Vu. Do not hesitate to give it a listen |
