Previously featured as one-half of Northwestern duo Elevated, Dust steps into the solo spotlight with If People Had Hinges, the latest single off his recently-released solo set. Here, the headliner does double-duty on the mic and behind the boards, crafting a moody yet infectiously driving backdrop for his morbid rhymes. Interest piqued? Dust’s Seventeen LP, a concept album centered around a car crash, is available online as of October 1, and fans can peep the official video for If People Had Hinges here.

Dusts's new concept album forges an entirely new sound across the decaying landscape of hip hop. This much needed change of pace fuzes an unmistakable boom bap sound with the poetic lyricism and instrumentation of an accomplished singer-songwriter. Dust's biting realism laces beats crafted from a bizarre yet captivating combinination of live guitars and vintage synthesizers. This album sounds unlike anything I have ever heard before, and I found it refreshingly enjoyable.

If there was any doubt before, If People Had Hinges makes clear that Dust is a poet. Eerie wailing serves as the perfect backdrop for Dust’s lyrical mastery. His lyrics are complex and chaotic before sliding into moans of melancholy ambivalence, creating an atmosphere of palpable angst. Dust’s level of openness and sincerity expose a refreshing level of vulnerability. His exploration of the darker strata of the human condition feels like a trip into the most disturbing corners of his amygdale, leaving you feeling eager to throw yourself into whatever voracious abyss this song sprang from… if only you didn’t feel compelled to listen to the rest of the album first.
In a word: poetry. |
