Drake - I Get Lonely Too
Artist: Drake
Producer: Noah "40" Shebib
Album: It's Never Enough
Label: YMCMB/Universal Motown
Do you miss the insanity that would accompany every new Drake release in the pre-Thank Me Later days? No? Well like it or not their back, albeit in diluted form, now that Drizzy’s begun to drop records off his upcoming r&b-only mixtape, beginning with the tearstained, I Get Lonely Too. The board work, of course, if provided by constant production partner Noah “40” Shebib, who interpolates TLC’s Fan Mail to create a typically ambient and warmly electronic beat for Aubrey to lay down the kind of vocals guaranteed to make teenage girls the world over hyperventilate. It’s only “r&b” in the sense that it’s romantic and full of crooning, but no matter the label, something tells me Drake’s got yet another hit on his hands, even if there’s sure to be no shortage of “he should stick to rapping” proponents (see the comments below). Drake’s sure to explode the internets mixtape, It’s Never Enough, doesn’t have a release date yet, so in the meantime we’ll just have to content ourselves with speculation and debate. Ah, just like the good ‘ol days.

The label cannot be happy about this, right? This is album-worthy material that Drake plans to give away for free in mixtape form? Something tells me that won't happen. This is solid.

Alright, I've noticed Drake is much more talented at writing R&B records than actually rapping. But what brings the song down is his voice. He just can't seem to carry a song though. 40 always sets the mood and the production, not Drake's voice, that is the emotion behind the song.

I am not a big R&B fan, but this is really really good. Keep it up Drizzy.

Great song, it'll probably be the best on the mixtape. I don't know why he would release an R&B-only mixtape, though. I mean, I like when he does it, minus Find Your Love, but I'm much more of a fan of his hip hop R&B/hip hop meddly flows way more. Slightly disappointed.

Chill song, like the vibes, but I just cannot stand Drizzy singing for a whole song. I cant help to think how much better this would be with someone else on the vocals.

I like when Drake sings. To me, it's his strongest trait as an artist, but that's just from my perspective. Drake presents very well on this track and the production only adds to the overall success of the track. Nice job Drizzy.

it was good for a bit, but Drake singin for the entire song started to put me to sleep. he shoulda at least threw a verse on in the middle.

Not sure how I feel about this r&b mixtape...drake is so overexposed these days that his still underdeveloped singing voice just gets annoying after a while...but this is a fairly good effort, nothing groundbreaking but it has a nice groove to it. I definitely agree that drakes hip hop/r&b fusion tracks are his strongest point...hopefully the mixtape has a few of those on it too! 3.5

Damn this is straight off of "So Far Gone". Loving the production and the lyrics are actually decent as well. Drake's voice has been worse. I feel like this track the way I felt about "Find Your Love". Lyrics and production were outstanding, vocals okay.

Drake's singing always sounds at its best when accompanied by 40's production, so I'm feelin' this one. I wonder what would happen if Drizzy put out a full-R&B album instead of mixtape, or maybe do something like So Far Gone and put out an EP later? Either way, this song works for me.

I cant take his singing throughout this whole song. Its not entertaining at all to me. My attention span must be horrible. But if nothing interests me after a minute, Ill change the track.

I don't know what y'all are listening to but slowing down a beat doesn't make it R&B. What the heck has happened people. All the real singers should be insulted. This is why Diddy is trying to sing on records. Both he and Drake know people are blinded by their status. Maybe I should say this isn't "real r&b."

This is pretty cool right here. I always like Drake singing, and he does nicely on here as well. Noah is like a musical genius with his sick beatmaking skills. Nicely done, but I still thinks its lacking something. I don't really want to Bang it as much as some of his other joints, but I will definitely throw it into rotation.

It might sound crazy, but the truth is the game moves so quick now Thank Me Later is already old news. Drake's obviously not going to put out another album, so a mixtape's exactly the thing to get people hyped again.
Anyway, in terms of this song specifically, Drake's one of the best singing rappers and I can dig some of his sung material, but this is just too 15-year-old girl-ish (check out that official art work) to earn a regular spot in my iPod. Ah, it's good. |

Can't go wrong with Drake. But the reason it won't be on a new album is because he's already done that. He'll do somethng new.

I’m a huge Drake fan. The guy encompasses everything that a world known artist should. However, as just that- it can be expected that we will see both successes and failures from artists of his caliber, as we are all only human. I don’t know that I am going to be a big fan of this R&B mix tape. I think they should have held on to this one for a minute…really sat on it. Idk but after a while even when an artist is loved for the music they put out, doing the same thing can get old– I feel like more people are in love with his melodically intelligent songs, but only because of the wordplay that Drake, as a lyrical genius, incorporates into his verses (as a rapper).
This dual role-play that he does with his tracks is really an attention grabber…but just doing the R&B thing, he kind of bores me.. his vocals on the hooks & bridges are straight, but I think everyone can somewhat agree that you expect him to breakout of sing-song mode with some nasty ass bars, and the just didn’t happen…but then again, what was I expecting- it is an R&B mix tape. The only other artist I really feel can get down like this is somewhat of a known-but-unknown entity, if you will (Demarco “Gemstones” Castle, Chicago IL). Drake- A for Effort, but I think you all should reconsider doing this strictly R&B mix tape. I get it- if it fails, I mean, so what…but I just feel like (as both a producer and a fan of music) this is another so far gone, just without the clever word play…and since every other rapper seems to be trying to make their own rendition of a drake-so-far-gone type of project, you’re putting yourself back in that category by doing something that isn’t really new…it is something that has already been done….. BY YOU! |

Solid effort from Drizzy-Drake; I can tolerate his singing ability to an extent until it becomes formulaically boring for my tastes. This wasn't too bad. I like the simplistic cover art for this too. Girls will go crazy for this song.
I like Storm Eclipse's two personas for Mr. Graham: Drake for rap, and Drizzy for R&B. I really like the chill atmosphere in 40's production; he has considerable skill making slow jams (see "Unthinkable") Personally, I don't mind his sung hooks and bridges, and even a sung verse or too, but like Rob Bates, I keep expecting him to drop a rap verse in. Still solid work. |
