Drake - 9 AM in Dallas
Artist: Drake
Producer: Boi-1da
Album: Thank Me Later [iTunes Bonus Track]
Label: YMCMB/Universal Motown
Dedicated Drake lovers (Drakeonians? Drizzyites? Aubrey’s Army?) undoubtedly copped Drake’s lyrical exploration 9 AM in Dallas when it leaked to the interweb a couple weeks ago, but now that the track has resurfaced in mastered form as a Thank Me Later iTunes bonus track, we thought Booth nation at large would enjoy hearing Drake in pure rap mode (or at least enjoy tearing the track apart – hi haters). Produced by my new favorite beatsmith Boi-1da, who overlays a grinding, electronic base with an angelic choir, 9 AM is first and foremost bulletin board material as Drake drops line after line sure to be obsessed over for at least the next couple days: “People say that old Drake, we started to miss it / you need to be a little more specific / is this what y’all want?” Well? Is it? We’ll begin to finally find out if Drake’s dream of crafting a platinum-selling album will come true when Thank Me Later finally officially drops tomorrow, June 15. March on Aubrey’s Army, march on.

If ever there was a last ditch, before-the-album-drops effort by an artist to remind their non-female fanbase that they didn't totally go pop, "9am in Dallas" is it.
Though Drake can spit with the best of them, I actually prefer the softer, more R&B side on the display for bulk of his debut album. Regardless, use this bonus track as that final motivation to go cop the album on Tuesday. |

Drake's album, while not a classic, was something that I highly enjoyed all the way through and I honestly believe that this track being included would have only made it better. Piano in the production is pure ear candy and Drake's word play was sick.
Hearing him rap over an insane beat with no hook was a refresher. Like Z said the softer more R&B oriented side of Drake is my preference too, but with tracks like this, It's clear and obvious that Drake is here to stay in both fields of singing and rapping. |

This wasn't that bad, but would of been better if it wasn't so long. A shorter version of this would of been a good replacement over the interlude track on Thank Me Later.
Drake's an average lyricist and thanks to dope production (40 and Boi-1da, who did a great job for this song) most of his songs are enjoyable. But I don't find him as charismatic as Jay-Z or Jeezy (both make the album and outshine him) so a record like this with no hook (one of his strongest talents), dosen't work as well. |

This is a dope, dope track! Drizzy really went in on this one. Fantastic production by Boi-1da. I wish this was on the CD version as well which ive pre-ordered on amazon (not sure when Australia gets a release date!)
On a side note I say my favourite Drake track is 'Fear' from the So Far Gone EP |

In my opinion, it's songs like these where drake is best. (songs like these meaning miss me, fear, the winner, say whats real). Basically, when the production is hot but not distracting and he just spits his fire.

Drake always comes with real ass lyrics, and this song is no different. People love him because they can relate. I have to agree wit most the beat definitely adds to the songs appeal.

To make this only an iTunes bonus cut and not featured on the album kind of disservices the entire product (in my opinion).
If you're gonna market the guy as both a credible emcee and guy-next-door crooner, why not tack this on instead of that atrocious Cece's Interlude? |

I agree with @Hoam Boy. Unforgettable and Light Up are my 2 favorite tracks. Shut It Down and Cece's Interlude are an automatic skip everytime.
I feel like Drake has decided "f the beat" and spits the same rhyme scheme over every track. What happened to flowing with the beat? What happened to this Drake? http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r8Kctk5KRQM Drake, this is decent (nice honor roll line), but not quite "what I want" |

I completely disagree with Z on this. Drake is such a better rapper then he is a singer. He's good enough to sing hooks, though I find he isnt good enough to keep me interested for a whole song when he makes those R&B tracks.
To this track, production from Boi-1da is sick & fits perfectly with Drake's flow. This would of been a good album track, though i guess it works well as a itunes bonus. |

first off im definetly gettin the album today... if it aint sold out. ill be surprised if it isnt sold out right now but about this song great freestyle by drizzy. this is a good one by aubrey but it woldve bin better if it was a little shorter. this album will hit platnum and clean up the oil spill in the gulf. i like the softer, R&B side of drake. so thank me later, free weezy nd june 15 in this b***h wassup!

Boi-1da never seems to dissapoint! Love the synth, tight drums. Drake sounds like he always does. Great! Doesn't make me want to buy the album any more, or less. Still plan on picking it up. It was a dope track. I don't expect anything less from Drake, and he hasn't let me down too many times either.

"smart kids who smoke weed...honor roll!" --- All Day $hit!
This is so SICK right here. I heard this about a month ago on another mixtape, but it never gets tired. This is a good addition to the album. If you don't like this track, then you probably aren't going to like Drake that much at all then... FIRE...CLASSIC! |

How many artists could drop a four minute, hookless track and have people sweat it like it was a single? There aren't many - and on that level alone Drake's made it. As I wrote in my Thank Me Later review, even the haters have to admit that Drake's a legit emcee...when he chooses to be.

Honestly, I didn't like many songs on his album. But as i heard this song two weeks ago i thought it was FIRE.And it still is. This is SO dope. Boi-1da is one of the hottest producers the beat alone deserves a 4 or 5 star rating. Drake flows nicely. One of his best songs. And a very "thoughtful" one. In my opinion this is a classic

This is rare. Although I have a big feeling there is alot going on behind the scenes with this dude. Today is his big day. He will do good no matter what just because he is on the "Winning Dynasty". As long as he dont F*ck Up like Chris Brown, then he will continue to succeed. Go against the rock. Get smashed by the rock. Real talk.

This song is really good. This is Drake at his best. Of course, it helps that he has a great track to spit over. Drake is more dynamic here than on most of the songs on Thank Me Later. Personally, I like him as a rapper more than as a singer. Even though it is a freestyle, this song does not seem lost at any point. I hope Drake returns to this style because, even though his latest album is really strong, he is one of the best in the game with songs like this.
